A huge crowd enjoyed today's performance of the San Francisco Opera in Golden Gate Park. This 34th annual concert was dedicated to the memory of Luciano Pavarotti. What did it look like? What did it sound like? Was the weather too cold? Was it as fun as the Opening Gala on Friday night? See you after the jump.

To hear what it sounded like, tune into KFDC FM 102.1 on Sunday, September 16 at 8:00 PM.

If you're going to buzz the opera, at least use a chopper with one of them Rolls Royce powerplants. It would be so much classier.

Hats off to the Diva. See you next year!

"A cherished tradition of San Francisco Opera’s opening week, San Francisco Chronicle Presents San Francisco Opera in the Park was established by Kurt Herbert Adler in 1971. The free event is open to the public and regularly attracts tens of thousands of music lovers. In the event’s time-honored finale, the audience joins with the singers in a rousing rendition of the drinking song (“Libiamo ne’ lieti calici”) from Verdi’s La Traviata.

The 2007 Opera in the Park concert, which takes place September 9 in Golden Gate Park’s Sharon Meadow, features an array of acclaimed artists from San Francisco Opera’s 2007-08 season performing arias and ensembles. Music Director and Principal Conductor Donald Runnicles will conduct the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. Singers for the event will include Dwayne Croft, Oren Gradus, Eric Halfvarson, Rhoslyn Jones, Petra Lang, Brian Leerhuber, Heidi Melton, James Rutherford, Chad Shelton, Andrew Shore, Elza van den Heever, and Ji Young Yang."

I love going to Opera in the Park - but I have to opine that this year's event wasn't quite the same. No big names on the roster (though the performances were fine). The set up of the stage this year seemed odd ... maybe due to the grass needing a break from activity in the typical areas where folks sit?? Total guess. The weather just wouldn't cooperate in that part of town ... reminding me why I wouldn't ever dream of living on that side of the City. A noticeable number of folks wouldn't bother to put their brie and crackers and booze down for a couple of minutes to stand nor to take their hats off for the National Anthem - what the hell? It is one of those rare opportunities when we get to do something together as a community ... and sing those wonderful words "land of the free and the home of the brave." Before I rant about folks' desires to be anonymous and "Bowl Alone" as Robert Putnam wrote, I have to say most of the folks that attend are great fun and interesting characters in a good way.

That isn't Carole Migden electioneering in the crowd (next to the dude in the horney hat), is it?
