worse yet it just shows the some of these criminals are smart enough to realize they need to move around the corner from the existing cameras the city put in. we should have closed circuit cameras everywhere around any project type housing to protect the residents that don't sling crack for a living.

The craziest part is the quote from the public housing guy: "we have not, at least not to my knowledge, heard anything from the residents of that site that they would want cameras there." Oh okay. The fact that private citizens are putting up cameras of their own isn't maybe an indication that they would in fact like cameras there? Or maybe it's just because they've seen how useless the city's surveillance system is, so residents are just saying, "eh, don't even bother; I'll do it myself."

OK, before this gets out of hand, I don't think I was the sole cause of this arrest the way the story put it. For one thing, I was so busy shouting at the idiot and making fun of him for mugging someone in front of the cameras (I was hoping to scare him off) that I didn't make it to the phone until he was out of sight. Somebody else must have called 911 sooner, because the cops caught him only two blocks away. The victim also did almost everything right -- she looked around and saw him coming, shouted loudly, fought off the tackle, and made it into the middle of the street where people could see her. The guy just couldn't keep her down, and he ended up running away with her chasing him. I think the niners might want to draft her.
