We Read The Weeklies

48-cover_web.jpgLast week's winner, the Bay Guardian. We should totally put needle disposal boxes in Golden Gate Park. Also, C.W. Nevius says that Newsom called him and yelled at him for 45 minutes after he wrote his first article on the issue. We'd put that call on mute. Gentrification is destroying Polk Street. City contractors still use sweatshop labor. Annalee Newitz has mice. Sonic Reducer's still at the Guardian. Cover article: Local bands to watch. You've got your whisky swillers, your barefoot folksters, your hip-hoppers, and some fey whimsy. And read Marke B's column and show him not everyone's away for Burning Man!

Next, the SF Weekly. [For some reason, they haven't updated the website at the time we're writing this. We'll try and add the links in when they update their site. Does this have anything to do with the news we heard of their copy editor leaving?] Matt Smith gets a form letter from Starbucks apologizing for spilling boiling coffee on his father. The Burning Man diary would be funnier if someone hadn't already set fire to the Burning Man a few days early. Ha! Why do we spend so much money on MUNI? Cover article: It's Chris Daly!!! Let the rehabilitation of the District 6 supervisor begin!! They call him "sweet," and note that his brother is a Republican. Fight finales at the Four Star next week, and we love the headline "Feast Bay" for the Art and Soul festival in Oakland over the weekend. A film reviewer from New York hated Balls of Fury. Common is a sensitive rapper. And talk with Ben Gibbard from Death Cab about Kerouac.

After the jump: the East Bay Express (independently owned since Hank Aaron was the home run king -- ha! We liked that one) and the San Jose Metro, along with the Weekly of the Week and the YTD count.

The East Bay Express: An interesting comparison of comments about two untimely deaths on SFGate, a MySpace tribute page, and motorcycle forums. Why're people from Your Black Muslim Bakery still working security at the Oakland Marriott? Staying drug-free on the playa. Book section: Okay, we're probably going to read "What Shat That?", about the spoor of many different series. Cover: One week behind the Guardian and the Metro, the EBX does its fall arts preview too. The Oakland Ballet is back, and the Berkeley Art Museum is under renovation. Well-described but mediocre food in Livermore. We love it when they don't like the restaurants! How organic vegetable delivery services are spiritually fulfilling. And Rage Against The Machine put on a good show in the AT&T Park parking lot two weeks ago. Rage! Rage! Rage! Rage!

And the San Jose Metro: Gary Singh loves soccer! Getting a new crime lab in Santa Clara County. Cover: Parkour!! We love parkour! It's like, where the French and Jackie Chan meet. These pictures are great! Rob Zombie is doing a remake of Halloween. The reviewer calls Halloween a legendary myth now, like Joseph Campbell. Beyonce v. Toby Keith -- both in town this week. Fancy Indian food in East Palo Alto. And they've done a musical version of Jane Austin's Emma?

Weekly of the Week: Ha! You guys thought we'd definitely pick the SF Weekly's cover article about Chris Daly, didn't you? Well, we did thoroughly enjoy it. BUT -- we're going with the Metro -- because we love parkour!!!!!! Plus -- a musical version of Emma? Swank Indian food in E.PA? A Gary Singh article not about the four blocks of San Jose we imagine him walking up and down, and up and down, trying to think of something to say? We don't even know what to expect now! (Also, in the Guardian: we loved the image of C.W. Nevius getting screamed at by Newsom for 45 minutes. 45 minutes! That's how long it takes to watch both a Daily Show and a Colbert Report if you skip the commercials!)

YTD count: SFBG: 10; SF Weekly: 10; EBX: 8; Metro: 6.

that's funny -- i suspected right away that those comments were about the SFGate account of the motorcycle crash that occured two blocks away from where i live.

That comment thread thoroughly disgusted me -- it's one thing to play anonymously on the internet, but to impugn people's loved ones where they will see it? Would you walk into a funeral and make an ass of yourself? Absolutely thoughtless, especially when you're poorly informed (by the way, many people were up in arms about "PUTTING OTHER PEOPLE AT RISK!!!!". On that block, after midnight -- which is when it happened -- there is NO ONE outside. No one's grandma is walking down the street, waiting to get run over by a roughneck motorcyclists.).

According to my neighbor, this sort of accident is something that happens regularly. So kids, if you're racing your motorcycle out by the port, be careful on that bridge turn.

I used to live on Polk Street, and to equate the drugs and hustling that goes on there with a vibrant "queer community" is disingenuous, to say the least.
