Today's the day! They've finally restarted Southwest service out of SFO, so those of you who hate to schlep all the way to Oakland so you can stand in line for a non-guaranteed seat assignment can rejoice. Gavin Newsom said it was good for the environment to have Southwest at all three Bay Area airports so people can go to the airport closest to their house. We hope Gavin's taking BART or Caltrain to his Southwest flight (since flying is so green).
Southwest has gone a little nuts about the news themselves -- are you also getting emails where they're giving you triple Rapid Rewards credit if you book a ticket online out of any Bay Area airport, or this fly three trips from SFO to LA or Las Vegas and get a free ticket? Plus these crazy fares! $39 to San Diego? Are they worried people aren't going to fly Southwest or something? So not a threat -- have you seen those lines in Oakland??
So it sounds like Oakland's going to stay the main hub, but if you're flying to SoCal or Chicago, you've got a Southwest SFO option. SFO flyers, (ding!) You are now free to move about the country. (We always really liked that advertising tagline.)

City Hall to SFO on BART is a cinch (via Google Transit)!
i just called southwest... apparently this offer just went out to "select" rapid rewards members and not everyone is eligible. but just what criteria they used to determine who gets the triple points they couldn't tell me... something stanks of elitism over at swa.
"elitism over at swa" ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, I can't stop laughing, I really can't. Is there nothing in this world that an anoymous SFist poster can't find in some way unfair?
I just hate those seating cards you receive to board. I feel inferior when I have a triple-digit number and the dork next to me at the gate has a single-digit card.
Do they fly SFO to San Jose? It will shave my commute time way down.
BTW United did at one time fly SFO to Oakland. No kidding- one weird flight a day as a stop over.
mariconsoy, I remember those SFO-OAK flights. Never took one, however. The emissions from that flight had to cancel out a whole lot of BART trips...
Well, last I heard, BART does not allow you to bring your 737 airliner on board. It's crowded enough at rush hour already.

There was (still is?) an American flight from SJC to OAK too. It went on to Tokyo, but SJC's runways were too short to allow it to take off with a full fuel load. But you could book an SJC to OAK trip on it.
It's not elitism. It's marketing. Southwest is a business, not a social welfare program, you know?
While Southwest Airlines may have started flying out of SFO 's Terminal 1 this week, they won't start to fly from there down to LA until November 4.
That's right. Not anywhere in LA, not Burbank, nor LAX nor Ontario.
You can make your Thanksgiving and beyond-amundo travel plans to LA now, but if you are one of the throngs of gay men and thier friends & admirers who will be gathering at The Hollywood Bowl on Sunday September 23, to see gay crooner Rufus!Rufus!Rufus! Wanwight do his last ever! Judy!Judy!Judy! Garland concert tribute, you'd better fly on Southwest out of Oakland, baby, or take the dreaded United Airlines flight out of SFO.
Why isn't Southwest more sensitive to our needs?
wsanders, AA discontinued SJ to Tokyo service. I also think they had lengthened the runway a few years ago so that the Tokyo plane could take off with a full load of fuel.
