The building collapsed due to the buildup of and corrosive effects of pigeon dung. Originally designed to be a four story outhouse for Embarcadero 1, civilization proceeded past outdoor plumbing and it remained empty (except for pigeons) for decades.

Your first picture is not indicative of the turnout. I was there. When I arrived at 12:30, there was no space on the "red". You can see in your picture that none of the dignitaries are even on stage. That is the band, that played prior to the start of the ceremony.

Was Bonds even there today? Surely he was elsewhere, slathering himself in flaxseed oil. At least Bono had the good sense to deface that awful fountain Herb Caen couldn't stand when U2 played there in '87. Nice headline, Jer.
