'Roid Rave: Celebrating Bonds At Justin Herman Plaza

If there's a widespread contingent of San Franciscans that feel Bonds is a cheater unworthy of praise, that sure wasn't reflected in the celebration down at Justin Herman Plaza today. Music, tons of fans in the orange and black, Old people, young people, tall people, most in ballcaps. Plenty of police to ensure nobody gets injured should a fan go into a 'roid rage. All of this to honor the guy that broke a long-standing home run record.

The last time we saw this many people in one place in the Financial District it was because of free food.

The throngs of people had plenty to do . . . push each other, listen to music over the loudspeakers . . .

. . . and thrill to a large screen projection of Barry Bonds' exploits. My, that's a large head.

Great shot.

Also, don't jump, Jer!

I think he's a cheater and worthy of praise.

Was Bonds even there today? Surely he was elsewhere, slathering himself in flaxseed oil. At least Bono had the good sense to deface that awful fountain Herb Caen couldn't stand when U2 played there in '87.

Nice headline, Jer.

Steakfrites -- I think we're looking at Top 5 for that one.

Thanks, Charles -- funny enough (SPOILER!) SFist Jim will have a good picture complete with actual baseball dignitaries posted in a few minutes.

Somebody should've told those folks there was a free symphony just a few blocks west at Yerba Buena.

Your first picture is not indicative of the turnout. I was there. When I arrived at 12:30, there was no space on the "red". You can see in your picture that none of the dignitaries are even on stage. That is the band, that played prior to the start of the ceremony.

What caused that building to collapse?

Yes, #6, there's a pretty obvious sequence of events; by the time I got down from Newscopter-ist, the crowds were much larger

The building collapsed due to the buildup of and corrosive effects of pigeon dung.
Originally designed to be a four story outhouse for Embarcadero 1, civilization proceeded past outdoor plumbing and it remained empty (except for pigeons) for decades.

We are not acknowledging that Jer has provided one of the funniest SFist headlines of the year.

Bonds' cheating certainly was reflected in the size of the crowd. The crowd was at most in the single-digit thousands.

Shouldn't thst read MIDDLE DIGIT thousands?
