8/26 Day Festival This Sunday

826day.jpg
Try drowning Dave Eggers, Michelle Tea, Stephen Elliott, Beth Lisick, Barb Bersche, Eileen Hassi, or 826 Program Director Erin Neeley, via a dunking booth, this Sunday afternoon at the first 8/26 Day Festival.

The literary bash will feature live performances, cartooning, Everett Middle School's dance troupe, readings, local writers (pardon me, novelists), paper flower making, haiku writing, bon mots flying to and fro, and much, much, much more. The festivities go from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mission Playground on Valencia Street between 19th and 20th Streets. And it's free!

Am I the only person in the universe who finds Eggers' hipster-crusaderism insufferably self-serving? And that his writing sucks, except for that diary of his?

Ugh. Every time a doe-eyed recent graduate ladles sycophantic praise on that guy a child somewhere gets rickets.

Ha! Love it.

Say what you will, but 826 Valencia is a unique organization that kids love and is helping to get kids excited about writing. I've loved it for my own son - you can't beat the pirate store at the front to capture the imagination of a kid who loathes writing. Who cares about Dave Eggers - it was his idea, it's a good one and more power to him.

Yeah! The only thing worse than a hipster (I mean eeewww!) is a hipster that started a non-profit that provides free after-school tutoring. I mean, how annoying is that! Geez, the nerve of these people....
