For what it's worth, Jer, I like the SFist format better. Gawker's is long-winded and boring to look at. I don't like being referred to as a "critter," either.

From what we understand, there has been an occasional highlight of commentary/commenters. However, the one I linked to (from Aug. 17) appears to be the first of a formal recognition, more or less akin to what we're doing with the top 5 (sob!). As they said "There's a new award in town!"

Hasn't Gawker been highlighting its best comments of the week for a long time already? That is certainly not the first one I've seen.
