SFist Photo: Move Over Rover - Ocean Beach Fire Pits

Off-leash dogs and all the rest of us will need to make room for the new artistic, $3000-or-so metal fire pits betwixt Fulton and Linkin near [The] Great Highway.

After years of stress and strife, the future of bonfires at San Francisco's Ocean Beach seems assured thanks to the work of lots of people, including a few cash-coping Burners. So, learn the rules, get some wood, and check it out. Maybe you'll like it as much as this person, or even these guys. Heh heh. See you there!

I think the fire pits are GREAT!! (and the metal flower one is beautiful!) A bonfire at the beach is one of the most enjoyable things I can think of. I applaud the neighbors, the surfrider organization, and the activists and artists who made this happen. ALL without legislation mind you!! This is a perfect example of the type of civic compromise and progress that makes me continue to love this city. It gives me HOPE!!!

I totally agree about the beauty of the fire pits and the beauty of the civic cooperation that produced them. My only nit pick is that some of the artistic new pits don't put off a lot of heat and it can be hard to huddle close to the fire on cold nights.

p.s. nice Jimi reference, Jim.

They are handsome and while I'm glad fires aren't completely banned, I still think the fire pit arrangement isn't the greatest. First, I think there are too few rings. Perhaps more will be added in time, but for now competition to get a ring is tough. Also, the placement of the rings isn't perfect. We had to make special arrangements to compensate for the wind direction. No biggie, I guess, but in the pre-ring times, we'd just choose a different location.

Rings or not, rule enforcement is tight and the cops I've dealt with are pricks. I could understand the attitude when the beach was overrun by fires and drunken crowds. But the ring requirement has really cut town on those things. Nevertheless, prepare to have cops inspecting your fire, bags, cups, etc.- even if you're in full compliance. We were lectured by the cops about dogs and large crowds even though our dogs were seated among us and there were no more than 15 people there.

Oh, well...

those are very.... blossom-y.

Linkin?

the man tryin to keep guest three down!!

I hope no one tries to steal a $3k firepit for scrap. :P

If it's too high it will be too hard to pee on the embers.

Please enjoy the fire pits, but DON'T extinguish your fire with sand. This makes them very hard to clean out.
