Doesn't every city and even town have some governing body? [rhetorical?][12] It might be called the city council, aldermen or as in SF, board of supersillists. Some cities have a mayor plus a city manager who is like a mini mayor, but they have some kinda council too. The supervisors are the equivalent of congress vs. mayor who is the executive branch like our King Bush II.

I would assume that it depends on what the benefits package of that new corporate high powered job is. If, like most of us here who don't work for the ciry, you have to contribute to your own medical insurance or your coverage isn't as good as the city's plan (which I think is quite generous) then you would stay on the city's plan. As for someone like Willie Brown, who also is covered for his many years in Sacramento (20 years for full coverage for life), I don't know who pays.

An answer to [12]'s question about why we have a Board of Supervisors, from wikipedia: "As the official name implies, the City and County of San Francisco is a consolidated city-county, being simultaneously a charter city and charter county with a consolidated government, a status it has had since 1856. It is the only such consolidation in California and the only California county with a mayor who is also the county executive. San Francisco is the only California city with a board of supervisors, which is also the city council." Some other examples of consolidated city-county are Denver, Philadelphia, Honolulu, Anchorage.

I don't think attendance matters. It's not like anything improves around here anyway. Most cities don't have a board of supervisors. Why do we? Really, someone answer that.

Oh my Goodness, I cannot wait until one day Chris blows and goes off about Ross Mirkarimi and his raging Meth / Pills / Cocaine / Alcohol / Heroin addiction. It's probably not okay that I think literally everyone even remotely famous has horrible addictions to one thing or another... maybe Ross is a sex addict. Oh and that is another reason it is a crock that Chris Daly was able to qualify for a Below Market Rate condo, I don't believe the value of lifetime health insurance is figured when calculating income. -iam5

Health benefits is one of the biggest perks of being a San Francisco city employee. After 5 years of city employment the city provides health insurance for rest of the employee's life. I believe there is currently a $5 billion liability to pay current and former employee's health benefits.

When did SF become the sequel to "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?" It seems we are testing the next premise, "Can you manage a city better than a 5th grader?" Sadly, in our case... it seems our managers CANT.

Sound like sensible rules to me ... although I'd suggest we try to make sure Supervisors aren't taking prescription/legal drugs as well ... folks making $100k/year with great medical insurance (I assume - the City gives it away to employees, right?) probably get all sorts of pills if they ask for them which can distort their sensibilities.
