creator of SFcrime here... Apparently there were 56 murders as of August 16th 2006, so we have 14 more at this time than the same time last year, or a 20% increase. For 2005, there were 47 murders as of August 26th. So that's an even bigger increase. As for finding the number of solved homicides...I don't even know where to begin to figure that out. I DO know however that, Between 1996 and 2000, the SFPD solved only 28 percent of the city's murders, rapes, robberies, shootings, stabbings and aggravated assaults--the lowest crime clearance rate in any of America's 20 biggest cities. For comparison, the national average was 42 percent. In San Jose, the average clearance rate was 49 percent. I can't find specific clearance rates for murder though...I remember seeing an article about that maybe a year or so ago...

Uhhh folks, we might be looking at the first shots of a MUNI v. pedestrian war. How long until some rebel, I mean pedestrian, strikes back and takes down one of these massive Imperial coaches Skywalker-style, lying in wait and then disabling it with his (or her) lightsaber? All PG of course, we pedestrians don't take lives. It's what makes us better than MUNI.
