Yet another pedestrian hit by yet another MUNI bus in the Richmond -- this time, the 1 California at 22nd Ave. Plus, Caltrain hit a car this morning too.
More murder counts for the SF Crime Blog -- a man was shot to death in the Bayview, at Innes and Mendell. This is murder number 69 for the year, and you'll be unsurprised to hear that the cops have no leads. Hey, SF Crime Blog, we don't suppose it'd be possible to maybe do a list of the murders for last year so we could compare how we're doing, or maybe indicate which murders have been solved by the SFPD, would it? (Yeah, we feel a little bad being all like, "do more!" when we haven't done nothing ourselves, but your blog is just such a great resource is all we're saying!)
And they're bumming in San Jose -- they're at risk of losing the title of "Safest Big City in America," because of a rash of car thefts in 2006 (a 25% increase from 2005). Their murder rate stayed about the same (26 murders lin 2005, 29 in 2006), while the rape rate decreased. Their mayor totally had the right response, which was "While the title is significant, I'm more concerned about the jump in auto thefts and property crime." Safest Big City prognosticators say the title's probably going to go to Honolulu this year as a result. The FBI is expected to announce 2006's winner some time in October.

Is there a tally for how many pedestrians have been hit/killed by MUNI this year?
Uhhh folks, we might be looking at the first shots of a MUNI v. pedestrian war. How long until some rebel, I mean pedestrian, strikes back and takes down one of these massive Imperial coaches Skywalker-style, lying in wait and then disabling it with his (or her) lightsaber?
All PG of course, we pedestrians don't take lives. It's what makes us better than MUNI.
Honolulu?? I got robbed there while I was trying to buy weed. Safe, my ass.
Did said pedestrian look where he/she was going and/or cross with or against the light? It's relevant.
creator of SFcrime here...
Apparently there were 56 murders as of August 16th 2006, so we have 14 more at this time than the same time last year, or a 20% increase. For 2005, there were 47 murders as of August 26th. So that's an even bigger increase.
As for finding the number of solved homicides...I don't even know where to begin to figure that out. I DO know however that, Between 1996 and 2000, the SFPD solved only 28 percent of the city's murders, rapes, robberies, shootings, stabbings and aggravated assaults--the lowest crime clearance rate in any of America's 20 biggest cities.
For comparison, the national average was 42 percent. In San Jose, the average clearance rate was 49 percent.
I can't find specific clearance rates for murder though...I remember seeing an article about that maybe a year or so ago...
oh yeah, and one more murder this morning in the Double Rock (or Alice Griffith) projects in Hunters Point.
Sorry, just found a little more information...We didn't hit 70 murders until September 13th last year.
and some more...
In 2005, 80 percent, or 74 out of 96 homicides, had not been solved in San Francisco
