8.0 Earthquake Hits Near Lima, Peru

Obviously, this isn't local (though we did get a small East Bay "jiggle" this morning) but definitely of local interest: it seems, according to KRON 4, a 8.0 earthquake hit "90 miles southeast" of Lima, Peru this afternoon, just off of the coast. Major power outages are reported. But from what we hear, they're deep quakes -- about 20-30 miles or more down. And a tsunami warning/watch is in effect for the coast of South America and parts of Central America.

Our hearts and crossed-fingers go out to those of you with loved ones in Peru, and of course, to the people of Peru.

Ugh. Awful.

More to come.

Oh shit. Are the coca exports to the Bay Area going to get impacted?

On a more serious note - I just got back from there a little over a month ago, and there are going to be many, many more fatalities. Lima's a city of 8 million people that has more than doubled in size recently. Most of that construction is slum stuff - concrete and rebar with no piles to the foundation, and top floors built on top of other floors when they can.

To say that it's not up to code is a drastic understatement, and this quake was way bigger than Loma Prieta. Here's hoping they come out of it ok...
