The Blue Angels get to stay. Vroom. Woosh.
Board of Supervisors voted down Chris Daly's measure that would've grounded the Blue Angels from zooming overheard in their annual freedom-ain't-free air extravaganza.
Michela Alioto-Pier was one of the strongest haters on Daly's measure, claiming that it was "a little fly-by-night, 'let's do this because we think it might not be safe,'" Hmm.

I personally believe Chris came up with this idea to further his image as the little man's King, therefore I don't give a rats ass that it didn't pass.
But at the same time I'm glad it's staying, because I love the Blue Angels show : )

Soz Lumpster!
I really hate the Blue Angels. They are a symbol of rampant militarism, potentially deadly, and excruciatingly loud. I wish they would go away, but I've noticed that people really like them, so I doubt it's going to happen (at least not before more accidents occur).
I think the people who like the Blue Angels are the vocal minority of city residents. It would be interesting to put this decision to a citywide vote. On my end, it's not a question of militarism or even safety. The blue angels are obnoxious and an incredible waste of money. The money spent keeping them in the air would be much better spent on almost anything else (like, say, funding equipment for the troops in Iraq, better military health benefits, better education benefits for the troops, etc...)
princess michela deigned to show up to work for a change? wow! now THAT is news...too bad she wasn't around to block those water rates...oh well the commute from up north is tough, and let's face it it is not like she cares about anyone but herself and running for assembly in 2008.
@#4
Perhaps the Blue Angels are a waste of money, but if they aren't flying in SF, they'll be flying somewhere else. It's really not an SF issue as to whether money should be allocated to them in the defense budget. No money will be saved by canceling their show.
As for obnoxious, well I guess we'll just have to disagree on that.
As long as the Navy wants to spend the money to keep them flying, I want to see them here in SF. I have memories going back to being a little kid of standing on rooftops in the City and watching the planes swoop overhead. It's exciting, and it's a great excuse to get out on someone's deck/roof and enjoy the weather that time of year.
Good point #6 about the money.
Yes, they're loud and obnoxious - but so is the crackhead who lives in front my apartment.
Obviously, San Francisco is not a bastion of support for the military. But regardless of your opinion of how the current administration has used our armed forces (atrociously), the fact is that the United States needs a standing military and we need people to serve in it.
We've already made it nearly impossible for the military to recruit here, and kicking out the Blue Angels would just be another "Fuck you" to the rest of the country that San Francisco is - believe it or not - a part of.
Speaking of kids, I'm sure not looking forward to being around when the Blue Angels return, what with my nine-month old (I've heard stories of kids being scared to tears when these planes fly over).
Alll I'm saying is that these are some scary sounds, don't think it's a good thing at all what San Francisco is still allowing to happen.
Didn't we learn anything from the disaster that occurred with the Blue Angels crash? This is a heavily populated area, am astounded this event was still allowed to continue.
Maybe we don't want this happening in our city:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaAV5Dajlfw
And maybe we were hoping that other civilized communities would turn them away, too. Military exercises may be necessary for pilot training, but showboating isn't.
Maybe "we" were irritated at your holier than "us" attitude, #9. "We" were delighted that Chris' little symbolic resolution went nowhere, as it would have in other "civilized communities."
it has nothing to do with holier than thou attitude.
i hate the insanely loud sound the jets make when they buzz the buildings for days in a row. it happens at work, while your outside trying to enjoy your lunch and while you are at home relaxing after work. there is no escaping it.
i can only speak for myself and my friends but i'm over it. move the show over to oakland, you can still fly over the bay and the rest of the bay area can enjoy the bullshit all they want.
p.s - on second thought, move it over the
tri-valley. see how quick the residents of danville/pleasanton/livermore get pissed off.
but no you're right..its just those crazy liberals out in san francisco that don't want the rest of the bay area to have their fun.
Oh thank goodness the vote went that way. I was worried the self-identifying Precious Flowers of the city wouldn't have anything to whine about. Crisis averted!
I agree with #11, take the show to the nascar-lovin' hicks who line up to watch this event.
The noise is bad enough, but what really irritates me is that every time I see one of those morons fly overhead I wonder how many textbooks one of those planes would buy.
Our tax dollars in action: paying the salaries of men-children to live out their Top Gun fantasies. Great.
The fact that so many people are complaining about the noise / vibrations the jets cause is really confusing me. Yes, they're loud. Yes, some people don't like loud things. The jets fly from, what, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.? For 3-4 days? And... you'd rather there not be something that is incredibly exciting for a lot of people because you don't get your [combined] 15 hours of relaxation? While you have the enitre rest of the year... you'd rather take away what many, many people consider an enjoyment.
Alright, just checkin'.
I'm much more confused about the fact that no one finds unnecessary risk and death a fact worth considering when it comes to shutting down this airshow. Did the family of the pilot who crashed really need to see him die?
And AJ, don't get your panties in a twist over my "holier than thou" attitude; I've read your comments on sfist, and the kettle will call you back.
not take away, move.
and this is loud in the slightly disturbing hiss of a Muni bus. have you walked downtown when the planes are flying over. the sounds bounces all over the buildings and its certainly not fair to compare it to regular city noise.
Hey folks, if the noise and excitement is too much for you, maybe you should just move to the suburbs, where it is nice and quiet. Ok, thanks!
Heh, MisterPlow. Your message called to mind the case of Alan Coe, a North Beach resident who sued Saints Peter & Paul because he felt their bells rang too loudly. Case was dismissed, judge said it was filed in the wrong venue. I believe Coe finally realized that if he wanted peace and quiet, it could be found in suburbia.
The Blue Angels don't bother me -- and yes, I live in the NE part of the city. I don't really have any suggestions for anyone who is bothered by the noise, other than next time the matter comes up for a vote in front of the Board o'Supes, make sure you call your district representative to let them know how you feel.
Dan, I was part serious and part trying to show how obnoxious it is when someone plays the 'move to the suburbs' card (like when anyone on these boards complains about needles, hobos, vandalism, etc.) Interesting story about Coe, though!
Chris Daly...Worst Politician Ever!
Where're the guys with the long beards and those shoulder rocket launchers when you really need them?
Hee!
