In a bit of tragic news:
SFPD officer, James Gustafson, 23, accidentally/fatally shot himself this past Saturday morning while partying it up with friends in his San Mateo apartment. Although his death seems to be more of the good-times-gone-too-far variety, rather than a successful suicide attempt, circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation.
It's also "unclear whether the gun was Gustafson's service weapon."

That is an extraordinarily tasteless headline.
It's the last line of Brock's piece that's the laugh: "Chin up, San Mateo".
definitely in poor taste, and I eat up SFist snark like crack cornflakes.
Is this a case of a dedicated public servant gunned down by a street thug, or a common criminal dispatched by a righteous LEO?
It's a good general rule that puns and stories about people dying are a bad mix.
Officer Gustafson died as a result of a tragic and unfortunate accident. His family, friends and other officers of the SFPD deserve more respect and caring than your title and illustration portray. I am a supporter and avid reader of SFIST but find this to be in extremely bad taste.
Sorry to bring this back to the item the blog post covered, but it appears that this esteemed member of the San Francisco Police Department mixed firearms and alcohol, and hilarity did not ensue. Quite frankly, the headline is appropriate and perhaps even gentle when describing the entirely preventable death of someone who knew better and should have acted differently.
Add me to the viewers who read this as being in extremely poor taste. Sounds like the Chris Daly School of Journalism. Consider all who may read this. Next time you need help, call an anarchist.
