We (sort of) hate to say "we told you so," but it looks like our obsession with the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association's focus on trash cans was just the tip of the iceberg on the garbage can tip.
At the August 6th meeting of the SNA, which we regretfully were unable to attend due to a prior commitment (sorry, mariconsoy), details were outlined for trash can offenders. Residents across the city, not just in the Sunnyside, can bring their bins out 24 hours prior to collection and leave them out 24 hours after collection. This actually seems pretty generous to us, since we've been a lot better about bringing in our bins. Violators can be outed by neighbors, pedestrians, or people suffering from severe entitlement with way too much time on their hands. Also generous, but not in a good way, are the fines for violating the new law. They can be as harsh (and ridiculous) as $300 for repeat offenders. That's $200 more than the fine for parking on the sidewalk. Cars are still bigger than trash cans, right?
Even though this law was passed last year, enforcers only really began to enforce a month or two ago. Nine citations have been issued in the last 90 days, but hundreds have received warnings.
So we suggest to all ya'll trash can offenders, bring in your cans, or pay the price.

My trash isn't always picked up on the same day. How does this factor into enforcement?
I've always found this type of law to be a suburban aesthetics law.
My neighbors leave their bins out sometimes, and within a few days there's mounds of trash all over the sidewalks. For some reason, passers-by see a bin and just throw their waste in that general direction.
I can't wait to rat the neighbors out.
ew, "suburban aesthetics." how icky.
Sunnyside is pretty suburban...easily mistaken for some parts of Daly City.
This is great! At my old place in the Haight the people next door left there bins outside all the time! It was great for them if their purpose was to attract raccoons and homeless people.
Guest #1. Call your trash company (probably Sunset Scavengers) and find out what your REAL pickup day is. If they don't pick it up on time, just call them and tell them and they'll fix the probelm. Your excuse is no excuse.
People of San Francisco:
STOP being SLOBS and clean out your garages so that you have a place to store your trash bins.
STOP parking on the sidewalk. I spit and throw gum on your cars! My next step is KEYING your car!!!
Fantastic!
The college kids across the street leave out their bins 'cause their entrance tunnel is packed with garbage. And when they get knocked or blown over no one there feels it's their responsibility to clean it up.
I pull out mine when I hear the truck coming to avoid having my recyclables dumped all over by an old Chinese woman looking for cans.
Dearest Deborah,
I've been monitoring the Sunnyside via Google sky spy, and have to say that the garbage can situation there is very grave. Hearst and also Judson are almost beyond hope.
I've asked NorCal waste to deputize me, so enforcement can begin with a relentless focus. It helps that I'm OCD so I'll stay at it for months until the next obsession overtakes me.
BTW, I've asked for senior deputy status, so if I see any of those Asian women taking recyclables out of the blue bins, I'll be authorized to tazer them.
What a great revenue opportunity for the City to make sure they heed the calls from neighbors about trash bin tardiness - and great benefit for all of the residents when the trash cans are taken back inside when they should be. If the City doesn't have the manpower to keep up with the complaints, they need to consider how regular citizens can help with enforcement themselves.
I'm amazed at how disrespectful of laws folks are in this City, and I can only believe it is due to the relative anonymity they feel and the low probability they'll get caught.
This opportunity for folks to take responsibility for the quality of life in their own neighborhoods is a good thing.
mariconsoy,
I think I might have to put you on speed dial. Would you also be willing to tazer psycho stalker/gardeners?
Hi,
I'm a regular SFist commenter and my sanity is hanging by a left-out garbage bin.
I just wanted you all to know that.
Thanks,
