SFist Photo: The Happy Dolphins of San Francisco

This is no porpoise - it's a genuine San Francisco dolphin. We'll Flipper you. Flipper you for real.

We've seen Cetaceans from San Francisco only just a few times, and then we're never really sure if they're porpoises or dolphins or whatever. But we're pretty sure these are dolphins that we saw from the Coastal Trail at Land's End last week. They were none too frisky. We expected them to be jumping a bit, like the Frank Sinatra-era TV Flipper, or the Jessica Alba filmed-in-Australia TV Flipper or even them military secret agent dolphins like Lieutenant junior grade Flipper. And we're not sure why this one had such a mottled appearance. (Is that normal?) Anyway, it was a magical experience to see these animals from one of our favorite Spots.

Quick! Pop it in a tuna can!

Hilarious photo caption reference to a hilarious blog!!

It's a short-nosed common dolphin. I don't know if the mottled skin is normal.

I surf Linda Mar on a regular basis and twice within this past year a dolphin has surfed about twenty feet from my board. It's pretty cool.

They don't seem to jump out of the water that much, although unsurprisingly the baby dolphins are often friskier and more playful than the adults.

Heard a story on CNN that a species of fresh-water dolphin on the Yangtzee River is feared to be extinct. First time a water mammal extinct due solely to human activity. Sad.

Dolphins: man's ocean-dwelling friend? You so sure?

I love the Coastal Trail at Land's End -- it's also one of my favorite spots -- and I've been amazed to see dolphins (usually two or three at a time) riding the curls really close to the shore of Ocean Beach. No one else around me seemed to notice them, or they're so used to them, they don't care. To bad for them.

These guys are spotted fairly frequently at Baker Beach. I saw them out there just last Sunday about 9 a.m.

Your pal,

it was really great to see 3 dolphins!
they look like they are gentle brothers!
i saw them 2 times in this month near the golden
gate bridge at about 9:30 a.m. They were right off Fort Point.
i think they are very smart like us and can
express their mind!
