SFist Blotter
Okay, we're kind of scared to say anything about the Your Black Muslim Bakery now, so let's just leave it at the handyman confessed, Chauncey Bailey's source has come out, and the bakery didn't do so well in health inspections last year. Oh, and the handyman was arrested in SF for mugging someone on a MUNI on Halloween 2005, but was spared jail time (see comments for clarification) by the DA's office for lack of evidence.
Over the weekend, a woman died while swimming in the Alcatraz Challenge race. People are now saying maybe their "Swim Or Die" slogan isn't in the best of taste.
We're also kind of freaked out by the story of the Concord city councilman Michael Chavez, who died of a heart attack during a public meeting being broadcast on local TV. Chavez had just spoken about the Concord Naval Weapons Station when his head slumped to his chest and he started turning blue. There was a doctor and a nurse at the public meeting and they ran up to help but it was too late. Chavez, a hairdresser, had just been elected to the council last November.
....and a Mills student was found dead in her NYU professor mother's apartment by Washington Square Park. Police are looking for her boyfriend.

Did I miss something? Why would you be afraid of saying something about The Black Muslim Bakery? Are they trying to intimidate? Can you clarify Rita?
I think she's referring to the fact that Bailey was reporting on the bakery when he was murdered.
Minor quibble with the post: you write that the killer was "arrested" but "let out of jail by the DA's office." However, the linked article indicates that he actually was convicted, probably of robbery or assault (or both, the article doesn't make it clear), and sentenced to probation, probably (again, not clear from the article) as the result of a plea bargain.
So, a minor detail, but maybe adds a little context.
Uh, didn't you hear that story about the journalist who was killed and how it relates to YBMB?
Yes, but sfist was reporting on it before. Now Rita expresses fear (understandably), but sfist had spoken about it yesterday without self censor after the connection had been made between the bakery and the murder. I was just wondering if anything had caused that but I have my answer, thanks..
Islam equals love (unless they're mad at you - then watch out sucka)
I was coming to post the same thing pointed out by a guest in [2]. I think it's actually a bit more than a minor detail, but anyhow to be accurate he wasn't let out of jail for lack of evidence but actually convicted and then sentenced to probation. Which I guess does make it technically true that he was "let out of jail," just for different reasons than the sfist post implies.
Guest[2] and Holly -- fair point, being put on probation is different than "let out of jail," though both do have the same result (person not in jail). Edits to follow.
