gang war going on right now for control of the tenderloin

Geez, what is going on in this town...

I work in a building at that corner and had the pleasure of watching it all happen. Within half an hour, it was like nothing had happened (except for the yellow tape and blood on the sidewalk, y'know). I unfortunately did not have a view of the cable car turnaround to see the look of shock and horror on all the tourists' faces.

I've been taking shortcuts through the Tenderloin to get to and from work...I think I'll be taking a different route this week if there's a gang war going on.

Maybe once the tourists start whining Mayor 20% will finally do something.

I hope no one who was getting his or her "Fash'On" at nearby Old Navy was injured.

i second that sentiment, Ginger.

I just walked past Ellis and Cyril Magnon and it was all roped off with police tape and lots of cop cars and an ambulance and fire truck. They loaded an African American man into the ambulance. He seemed to look okay. Is this related or a different shooting?

what the hell?

these daytime shootings are getting way too common. heck, on halloween we had record number of cops on the street and still someone not only got off 9 shots, THEY NEVER GOT CAUGHT.

Amazing though that despite this rising dangerous crime, here now in the middle of our city, you people still think Mayor McDreamy is doing a great job, and no one will stand up to a DA that's mentally incapable of busting criminals.

you deserve daytime shootings, SF and you deserve to see tourism go down. you love murders and you let the mayor and the DA and the cops get away with sitting on their butts.

per capita SF doesn't have a large police force. I think McDreamy for all his faults has put in the budget for 5 extra police academy classes. Of course he had to successfully fight off Chris Daly worshiper of the poor

SF doesn't let the cops do their jobs. The DA is elected and is just a reflection of our liberalism. We always choose programs, affordable housing, reason, hugs over tough assed cops and prosecution. Its unsightly but tough cops pushing gangs is the only way.

I mean we have a small slight Asian lady as our chief who is not respected, a transgender running the police commission and a DA that isn't tough on crime. The cops here know the deal. Its a PC town. Would you stick your neck out with the mixed messages being sent?

The cops in the Tenderloin have made almost 3000 felony arrests this year. that covers the area between market (nothing on market just up to it) Geary (nothing on it just uo to it) and Larkin (same as the last two) and the unit bloc of Grant. Smallest area covered by a station. Dosent sound like they are sitting on there butts.

Now the Mayor has ordered all these new foot beats to one up Mirkarimi (spelled it best i cold). Things will get worse cause cops cant respond as fast. Used to be you hear the shooting at Turk and Mason youd head to hyde st for the car to go by , cant do that walking. you just walk to the scene and take the report. Oh well thats what they want

it's high time gavvy-baby took the bull by the tail and faced the situation: WE'RE HAVING TOO MUCH GUNPLAY ON YOUR WATCH! i've seen mayors since Lapham and none of them were as loose on violent crime as the current one.
in between photo-ops, DO SOMETHING TO STOP THE GUNPLAY. GO AFTER THE GANGBANGERS and GET RID OF THEM.
you're in charge of PUBLIC SAFETY, DO SOMETHING.

Those new cops are going to make things worse. Some not all should not be allowed to patrol. theres been new guys who have quit and have been talked into coming back. there have been recruits who have flunked out of the academy and they have been reinstated. when the staff at the academy complained they were transferred out. the mayor thinks if they past the entrance test there should be no reason for someone to flunk out. it will get worse and there will be more lawsuits because of this

Im still mad about the coyotes!

State did that

@11: The whole idea behind foot patrols isn't to come up with the quickest reaction time... it's to nip the problem in the bud before you need to react.

If we're going to help teachers buy homes in the city , we should do the same for cops and return to the rule where cops are required to live here if they're going to be OUR cops.

Your completely right Anonymous Guest 17 who should login.

Police should live near where they police, that is, SFPD officers should live in the city. Why are there no housing programs for the people that protect us to live? Do they all have to commute in from Richmond or Gilroy to protect a city they don't have a vested interest in?

New SFPD recruits make, what, $80k? That's above the low income housing limit but well below the "able to raise a family and/or own market rate property" limit.

guest 10,

me thinks thee needs some diversity training. They have free classes at city college. But be careful! The instructor might be an Asian Tranny and you might learn to like her!

What a bunch of nonsense ... it's the police's fault for not living in the city, it's society's fault, blah blah blah because it's just not politically correct to mention that the black community is running around shooting each other.

Halloween in the Castro ... BLACKS SHOOTING EACH OTHER

Driveby in the Tenderloin ... BLACKS SHOOTING EACH OTHER

People living in BRAND NEW projects FOR FREE that are nicer than luxury condos that cost $1 million and the result ... BLACKS SHOOTING EACH OTHER

I feel bad for the drive-by shooters. I grew up in wealth and privledge, and... know how to shoot as a result.

This poor guy in a "silver sedan" fires six shots and only can hit a guy in the ankle?

Gun traning for crimials would protect civilians (no stray shots) and solve the crime problem in a few years (they would off each other).

Guest #20, I think this is a case of asians shooting blacks. Although, I do not know whether or not they are asian trannies shooting blacks.

This site is going to change the city -- thank god for sfist!

The last shootings on Market were between Oakland and Richmond gangs. A man was shot in the back of the head at a mini-mart.

Why? Lucrative drug trade with no enforcement. Now... I know we all love pot, coke, etc, but alas, without enforcement and high profits, people fight for the revenue.

This will increase. The big risk is that drug prices will rise. If a few sellers are allowed to consolidate control of supply, they can choose any price they want! As residents, we need to do something to keep the supply open and free, And keep 7 million Bay Area residents from using our city as a tradingf bizzare. We are only 8 percent of the Bay Area population -- we don't need to suffer through the majority of crime. Rid the drugs or change federal law. Sadly I think enforcing law is the quickist path... fight to decrimalize regionally or nationally later.

cement brunette: oh, i think you know very well whether or not they are.

And still the Chronicle will give the photo op mayor a pass on this. He really is doing a poor job. but crime is one thing that even the rich white folk (who shop in union square) will get down on him about.

The rich white folk are the problem. They are protected and as a result and live an ideal liberal democratic lifestyle of second chance for ciminals, etc.

The ones who have to live with it and oppose it are those who live in it. The poor are the new conservatives.

foot patrols wont nip the problem in the bud... what do you think that becuase someone sees a cop on the street everyday they wont shoot someone. get real. these shooters dont care about the cops. and we the people in the neighborhoods already know the cops that patrol there. for the most part the (atr least in the tenderloin) the suspects dont live there, they commute in from western addition, bayview, richmond oakland , etc.... the people who live in the tenderloin are not out there shooting each other. they have the fixed post(cops not allowed to leave) in the northern and they shoot some one a block away knowning that the cops cant leave. You have politicians running the police dept. not good, wont work. downtown goes along with it becaise they all want to be the next chief. you need someone who has the time to retire or is elected. maybe daly has a good idea in mergeing with the sheriffs dept that way the sheriff is elected and dosent have to do what the mayor tells em or get demoted. bet you never thought a SFPD officer would agree with daly

anyone remember the story in the chron awhile back about the i theft victim chasing the suspect down and catching her. big story. the suspect was on probation at the time for the same offense. end of the story was that the victim chased her down and the da gave the suspect .....another probation. with the with a risk like that why not do crime in the city. on probation do a crime get probation. no risk ......not hard to figure out whats going on here

were there two different shootings? I was right near a shooting at around 440pm today, ofarrell and mason (I think), six shots, man lying on the street beneath the driver side door of his sedan, windows shot out. cops were really quick on the scene, not sure if the victim survived. horrible.

anyone know anything?

Guest 20, so what? What's the next step if black people are responsible for all of the shootings? I'm curious to know your suggestion.

Guest 29 and others, how come no anger for judges? They sentence, not District Attorneys.

Wow... sounds like three or so different shootings happened today.

This commuter criminal crap has to end ...

judges are just as bad but from my expericence most cases get settled before the judge makes the decision. ive seen very few cases where the judge dose something over the da's objection/ it happens but not often

follow up to 31 they sentence in jury trials most cases dont get that far . 13 yrs on the force and id say less than 10 jury trials. if its a plea before jury trial its usally agreed upon by da and defense.

just so everyone knows i wrote # 11,13,15,28,29,32
only signed in a guest incase i piss some people off. i dont want to be messed with at work

[34] Brock etc.

Would you PAH LEEE AZZ disable the "guest" feature.

why no guest feature mariconsoy

I know nobody on sfist would ever do drugs, but if you ever do buy any I hope you're thinking carefully about whether you're contributing to the problem. These guys aren't just shooting each other for fun.

WOw, this is the most bizzare comment thread I have read on Sfist. Log on and comment...

Why hasn't anyone played the "if you don't like it, move to the suburbs" card yet?

Does anyone know anything about the other shooting a few hours later on Ellis that guest 30 and I were asking about?? That one seems much worse. I think they got more than an ankle.

I have been wondering the same thing about the shooting on Ellis near Cold Stone at around 4:45. It was brutal. Guy was lying on the pavement, no motion. I was looking for details but the media hasn't picked it up.

the one on ellis was another driveby and the guy died. i think the regular news is getting confused cause the two were close to the same location and a few hours apart.

I was at the corner of Ellis and Cyril at 4:30 when all the police cars rushed in and sealed off part of Ellis. I saw the medics doing CPR on this unconscious African-American man who appeared dead. It surely looked more severe than the earlier incident that's mentioned above, but the one that I saw is not reported anywhere. Later I returned to the scene and saw the cops checking out this car with shattered windows plus 2 bullet holes on a door, and another bullet hole on the cafe's glass wall.

the photo in the examiner shows the Ellis St shooting but it talks about the market/turk/mason shooting.

SFGAte has a story about a fatal shooting in Fremont . SF had two yesterday and no stories that I can find.

A bit of a late response to guest 17 and MarkBallew above regarding housing for teachers: It's pretty much a myth. Something vaguely proposed as an alternative to paying us a reasonable wage and never realized. So please, let's stop talking about this as if it were true. It's irksome to those of us who can only dream of an $80k starting salary. Or ending one, for that matter.

Agree with cecinestpas. I'm a public high school teacher in my third year and only make around $42k. Very few of the teachers I work with are financially independent, and none of us are receiving any kind of public assistance with housing.
