SFist Tonight

whiskey-790490.jpg -- Writers With Drinks not only boasts an awesome substance-abuse party, but overlaps it with readings from some of your favorite local and national (that is to say, usually New York City- or LA-based) scribes and novelists. Who knew writers like to drink?

But brace yourselves for tonight's edition: an "honest" look at the (dying? dead? necessary?) state of print publishing. Such inky icons as Ben Fong-Torres (from Rolling Stone), Lynn Peril (publisher of Mystery Date), Audacia Ray (editor of $pread Magazine), Deborah Ross (contributor to Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine), Kaya Oakes (poetry editor at Kitchen Sink Magazine), and Jimmy Chen (contributor at McSweeney's) will all read and maybe make an occasional outburst.

Drinking is strongly encouraged and enabled, but not necessary, but always fun if you do. The looking back to yesteryear goes from 7:30 to 9:30 at Make-Out Room, 3225 22nd St. (at Mission); admission is $3-$5 on a sliding scale. (Aw, thanks.)

One more thing about tonight's Writers With Drinks: proceeds go to benefit Other Magazine, so drink the top-shelf stuff and loads of it. You didn't really need that liver, did you?

-- Ani DiFranco never fails to brings the ladies and a few sensitive dudes to tears or soft, gentle whimpering with her honest lyrics, music, and tight body. Anais Mitchell opens. Her folk-rock tunes of love gone gosh darn crummy start at 8 p.m. at the Warfield, 982 Market (at Fifth St.); Tickets are $40.50.

-- Red Devil Lounge continues to play host to Generation Xers and their bulimic appetite for the chortle-worthy shit that they used to lie about listening to back in the '80s and the early '90s. But we think it's a brilliant way of booking talent. Oh yeah, hip hop artist Vanilla Ice (along with the Brodys) will grace the stage for all of you "guilty-pleasure" enthusiasts, starting at 8 p.m. at Red Devil Lounge, 1695 Polk. Tickets are $20.
