SFist Interviews: Anthony Gordon of Loquat

Psych_Loquat.jpg

Update!: We got the contest entry form working (we think) -- sorry about the mixup. Go on, enter now!

San Francisco pop darlings Loquat are peeking their heads out from inside their studio tomorrow night to play a rare show at the Independent. They've been working on a new album with friends and producers the Rondo Brothers, who are also playing tomorrow night's show, along with Foxtail Somersault.

They played a brief set back in March at the Noise Pop happy hour, where they introduced some of their new tracks. They sounded amazing as usual, but we couldn't tell you how they looked because the place was so packed we shorties couldn't see a thing. Disclosure: we are also friends with the band. Whenever we hear Kylee Swenson's voice, it sends chills down our spines, and the band is so tight and lush and great fun to watch live.

So, get your tickets for tomorrow's show now! Or you can enter to win two tickets by entering our contest below. (You must be 21 to enter.) The contest ends at 4 pm today, and the winner will be notified before the end of the working day.

Loquat w/Rondo Brothers and Foxtail Somersault | The Independent | Saturday, July 14, 8:30 pm | 21+, $12

How's your new album coming along? It sounds like you're taking a different direction than you did with It's Yours to Keep.
It’s going swimmingly, thanks for asking. I think the biggest difference between the new record and “it’s your to keep” is that we’re exploring a lot of different styles on this one. We’ve written everything from a Roy Orbison-meets-jangle-pop sort of a tune to a dub-inflected ballad that swells into this massive stadium-rock epic. We’ve got one tune on the record that sounds like Fleetwood Mac versus The Bee Gees versus The Smiths, but is much, much more dramatic than all of those bands combined. It’s like an episode of “Dynasty” with a pounding four-on-the-floor beat. We’re hoping this record will make you weep while you dance.

Also, this is the first time we’ve worked with record producers instead of doing it ourselves. It’s been great getting outside opinions and production ideas, but being able to focus on writing and performing instead of tweaking stuff in the studio has been the real cool thing for us.

More of Anthony's answers after the jump!

What bands do you most love to play with?
Oh…Friends, of course. The Junior Panthers gave us our first gig ever and we still hang out with them, in part or in full, at least a few times a week. To be honest with you, though, we don’t do tons of gigs with bands we’ve already played with. I think it’s better to come up with fresh lineups so the audience has a chance to see something new. As for going to shows as a fan, there are a few great acts here in the city. Kelly Stoltz is fantastic. Bart Davenport is quite a performer. The Dodos are good.

What would Loquat's ultimate show be like?
I don’t think we’d mind headlining the Fillmore sometime in the next few years. Sometimes it’s best to look forward and imagine what could actually happen.

Best show you've ever been to as a spectator?
Hard to say…I’ve been to more than 400 shows in my life so they sort of blur together. The best show in recent memory was seeing the Cure at Coachella. They opened with “Push” and it was at dusk and it sounded so good and the scenery was so beautiful. I looked over at Kylee and she had a tear in her eyes. It was moving.

Now the standard SFist questions

Anthony_Solo.jpgName
Anthony Gordon

Introduce yourself in one sentence
Lover, fighter.

Age and Occupation
30. Musician. Day Job: Pro Audio PR Flack.

Home Town
I was born in Newport Beach and raised in too many places to call any one home.

How long have you lived in the Bay Area and Where (city, neighborhood
etc.) and WHY?

I’ve lived in the bay for 17 years and in San Francisco for 14. I moved to the inner Richmond when I was 16 and lived just off Clement St for my first 8 years here. They used to call me the Prince of Clement. Currently, I live with my wife (Loquat singer/guitarist Kylee Swenson) and our cat in Alamo Square . San Francisco is still, to me, my favorite city in the world for too many reasons to list. That said, here is a partial list of things I love and loathe about our little town: it’s romantic, it’s cold, Chinese food, graffiti, bums, buses, hipsters, the 30 Stockton, Clementine, Real Guitars, the Bottom of the Hill, Little Star Pizza, the “NO SEX” guy at Powell St BART, Richmond Celebrities, the 540 Club, the bridge in the fog, China Beach, Green Apple Books…It’s a long list.

Favorite place to spend time online (website/blog/RSS feeds)
Myspace (don’t we all?), Digg, Drudge, SFist, Wikipedia, The Onion…

Favorite local business
Parklife

What I'm currently Reading
“I, Lucifer” by Glenn Duncan. It’s the best new novel I’ve read in years.

Best Deal in San Francisco
King of Thai Noodle House on Clement Street

Favorite mode of transportation
Lately it’s walking, but my wife has a pretty nice ride that I dig riding shotgun in.

Best Band or Musician to come out of the Bay Area
I’ll go with the Dead Kennedys, although I also love Red House Painters.

Favorite Bay Area Stereotype, and whether or not you buy into it
That we’re “wine and cheese” people. Most people I know are more “fernet and tacos” types. That said, I love wine, cheese, tacos and Fernet.

Favorite local hangout
Casanova

SF has the BEST
Friends.

You've never lived in SF until
You seen something horrifying go down on the bus.

Favorite Bay area politician of past or present
Matt Gonzalez has been a great supporter of our band -– we played his inauguration party when he was named president of the board of supes –- and he really seemed to care about our disctrict (west add represent) when he was our supe, so I’ll go with him.

Now that Mayor Gavin is single, who are you going to set him up with?
Virginia Ramos, aka “The Tamale Lady”

You can tell someone is a local here IF
You see them at Taqueria Cancun after midnight

SF would be soooo much better if only
BART ran all night and the bars stayed open later.

Best Burrito
Castellito on Golden Gate . They add meat juice.

Best Restaurant
Too many to make that call, but I love Clementine on Clement and Ruth’s Chris (I know it’s a chain, sorry) on Van Ness.

Best movie scene filmed in or about SF
In all the Dirty Harry movies they have car chases that show Harry taking a quick left on Mission and suddenly he’s on top of Telegraph hill and then he turns right and he’s in SOMA. I love when they screw up the driving directions in the city.

Favorite artist to come out of the bay area
Annie Liebovitz

Favorite author to come out of the bay area
Jack Kerouac

Place you always tell visitors to check out
Golden Gate Park

Favorite Bridge in the area
Do you even have to ask? Here’s a hint: it’s the most famous bridge ever built and it’s International Orange. Look up –- you cant miss it.

You have two hours and $15 bucks to kill in SF, what are you going to do?
$1 Drinks night at the 540 Club.

I have found/sold/bought the following on craigslist
4 Guitars, 2 basses, some recording equipment…

I want all the SFists out there to know
I think they already know too much about me by this point!

Tell us a San Francisco Story
When I first came to visit the city I was 6 years old and my dad taught me how to jump on the cable cars and not pay for them. I’ve mastered and elevated his technique and apply it to every form of MUNI whenever I possibly can.

Question you'd ask if you were doing this interview
Will you respect me in the morning?

Who would you like to see interviewed in the future (+ contact info
if you've got it):
Oscar Wilde. If you can make that happen, I’ll be very impressed.
