We Read The Weeklies

cover.jpgBack after the July 4th break! The winner from two weeks ago: the SJ Metro. This Media News Corp. group taking over the Merc News is bad for local news coverage. Dude! We need to start following San Jose local politics -- one of their city council members eloped last weekend! Annalee Newitz liked Transformers. Bodybuilders in San Jose this weekend -- look at the cords on that guy's neck! Cover article: we're embarrassed to say that we had no idea that a San Jose Grand Prix even existed. Huh. Okay, the line "soon to be famous as 'the movie that caused those in-flight suicides'" to describe License to Wed is pretty hilarious. Spanish food in Menlo Park (we got totally trashed on sangria at that restaurant once! Fond memories.) And the Metro also wants more late-night pastry places. We hear ya.

Next, oh.... the SF Weekly. Matt Smith finds out that Don Fisher got arrested for getting 15 year old girls drunk (when he was 19). The power of investigative journalism, folks! ....and HA! We had never noticed that Gavin Newsom uses the word "extraordinary" a lot! Also, the Weekly proposes some more codes of conduct for the Board of Supes. Where's "wipe" on that list? And Will Harper gets some troubling responses to his Craigslist iPhone personal. Cover article: does transgender identification need to be treated? (read this one! it's really good!) Saturday -- Bardot-a-Go-Go and boooo to the Independent Press Association for ruining the businesses of a bunch of local zines. Meredith braves 16th and Capp Street; we got a good chuckle out of SFist Ced's rejoinder. Cults with bands. And the Bouncer says the new Bruno's is kind of boring (who knew you used to be able to sneak in through the back door?)

After the jump: The Bay Guardian and the East Bay Express, along with the coveted Weekly of the Week selection and your running tally of the winners for fiscal year 2007.

Next up: the Guardian. Tim Redmond makes an interesting argument about why wifi should be publicly run. There's an editorial saying more or less the same thing too. Robert Haaland and the SEIU don't like Aaron Peskin's MUNI reform plan. Something funny's going on with some proposal Carole Migden's making about the coastline. Also, they think the Ethics Commission sucks. Shark week! Huh, there's a pullout ad for a GirlFest this weekend. Like LadyFest, only younger? Sonic Reducer: The Humboldt music scene and a farewell party. Cover article: Hyphy is NOT dead. Don't call it a comeback! Hey, Finnish Eurovision winner Lordi is playing a free set at Ozzfest this week. An interview with Kiki & Herb. And L.E. Leone doesn't even pretend to go to a restaurant this week.

And the EBX: A strange, Miranda July-like crime report from a UC Berkeley identity theft victim, involving Missouri. A Berkeley local politics website tries to get people involved, is considered conservative. Cover article: This is Planet Earth, ba da da, ba ba, ba da-da -- this is Planet Earth. (We really love this feature of the EBX blog where they summarize their cover article FOR US, by the way!) Hey, why'd they shrink down I Like Eating? And the ad on the back that says "The East Bay Express: Independently-owned since the Chronicle started putting pets on page 1" is pretty funny.

Weekly of the Week: No! It's NOT just because our new editor is an alum! That's right, the prize this week goes to the SF Weekly! Sure, the transgender article wins our best article of the week award, and darn it, we totally should've thought to do a proposed code of conduct list for the Board of Supes ourselves, and we're always happy when people slag on the IPA, but what really iced the deal? That article about Gavin Newsom. EXTRAORDINARY!

YTD count: SFBG: 8, SF Weekly: 8; EBX: 7, Metro: 4.

Long-time lurker, first-time commenter. I'm in charge of posting the online version of the SJ Metro birdcage lining--uh, I mean, the SJ Metro alt-weekly. On behalf of the Metro, I'm honored and jazzed to see us win the Weekly of the Week title this week. Thanks for recapping our issue each week.
