"The title 'DJ' seems more about a nod to tradition at this point than an authentic title for what I do," DJ Silencefiction (Marc Kate) tells us, which sounds about right coming from someone so talented; so unafraid of modern sound techniques; and (thankfully) so hellbent on not playing at your typical bottle-service, "VIP"-themed bullshit venues, minus any keeping-it-real pretentiousness.

More of a laptop DJ than a vinyl one nowadays, the former member of I Am Spoonbender and current one half of the industrial-ish duo Evolution Rainbow could very well reignite this long-running Wednesday weekly. (We’re a bit biased since we think he’s one of finest DJs the country has to offer, period.) But to be fair, although Qoöl has been around for some time, it still manages to be pretty fresh and staves off any douche-baggery that devours so many well-liked club nights.
Tonight’s gig at 111 Minna Gallery's "Qoöl" (Loöq Records long-running and well-admired happy hour -- where Silencefiction will debut not as a guest, but as a full-blown resident DJ -- will be historical one, so (as the cliché goes) you don’t want to miss it. But for real, kids, you don't this lush, minimalist techno wonder. (What’s more, you also might get a chance to see his loverly wife on the dance floor or throwing back a cocktail, Miss Trannyshack 2003, Fauxnique [AKA Monique Jenkinson.])
"Qoöl" (Sööperqoöl vs. High Jinx) goes from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. at 111 Minna Gallery; Admission is $5 (mere pennies, folks!), but free between 5 p.m.-6 p.m.
