Political Junkie: Gavin's Back (Ow!)
Oh, Chris Daly's going to have a field day with this one for his own blog -- the Chronicle Local News Blog gleefully reports that, at Sunday's Celebrity All-Star game at AT&T Park, former college baseball player Mayor Gavin Newsom:
1) went 0-for, not hitting anything pitched to him;
2) was on the losing side of the 13-8 score for the National League
3) hit a pop-up, which was promptly palmed by Dancing with the Stars second-placer Jerry Rice,
4) was booed; and
5) threw out his back.
Gavin's been observed wincing and walking at a 45-degree angle in City Hall today, and the emcee at the opening of the Federal Building this afternoon expressed sympathy as Gavin gripped the sides of the podium tightly so he could give his speech.
Others playing at the Celebrity All-Star game included Jimmy Kimmel, chef Bobby Flay, and Kevin Dillon from Entourage. James Denton from Desperate Housewives hit an impressive home run and another Dancing with the Stars alum, ESPN's Kenny Mayne, deftly caught what would have otherwise been a homer from Kimmel.
No word if Gavin tried to ply his pitcher ways with the ubiquitous Alyssa Milano, who emceed.

I hate to sound silly...
...but this made me seriously 'lolz.'
Like, to no end.
You keep bringing on the 'lolz' Gavin.
According to Alyssa's softcore porn years that took place after her time on Who's the Boss and prior to her time on Charmed, she has fake boobs.
First a bum hip now a bad back, somebody get this man a drink...
I wonder what Jennifer is doing to the San Francisco Mayor that he is so out of shape. Last year he did the bay to breakers at his best time and threw a perfect first pitch at a Giants game. Let's see...oh right he was dating Brittanie at the time and she knows how to keep her mouth shut...
Either that or the guilt of the past four years is haunting Gavin everyday.
Kimmel was mic'd during the game and said "I hear the mayor's a player."
What is with this constant tracking and celebration of the SF mayor's every little misfortune?
You can agree or disagree with what he's done, but this endless "Gavin threw out his back today. Yay!" stuff is kind of bitter and petty. Hey, maybe he'll step in poo tomorrow!
No shit Jerry Rice caught anything within an acre of him. But the rest is pretty sad.
I know what ya mean #5. SFist needs to stop hating on Newsom all the time. Even if you don't like his policies or whatever, making fun of his personal misfortune is really lame.
Perhaps if Newsom stepped in some poo he might figure out how to do his job and keep people from shitting on the sidewalks and streets and get the DPW to do their job and clean that shit up.
And doesn't Newsom have a college degree in baseball?

I hear Daly was outside with the Homeless Advocates marching for the right of bums, oops homeless, to sleep in the bleachers.
I think it is great that we have such a hunk for a mayor, considering his kingdom is full of fags. He even tried to do special weddings for us!
He's cute and hangs out with rich people, but in many ways is just a regular Joe. That's how he threw out his back, silly little macho thing with his balls! [baseballs]
I'm sure worried that one of those society dolls will get him hooked on Oxycotyn for his back pain. You KNOW that they're all sitting around in penthouses watching the fog in a fog. Oxy and Stoli day and night is great for pain, be it back or emotional. Careful Gav! Watch out for Dedi, Mitzi, Denisi, and don't drink anything they give you unless it's from an unopened container!
Okay to the two koolaid drinkers; let's get this straight at some point it is ironic even sadistic to stand up for a man who literally made a really bad choice not once but, more than once.
Gavin is almost a Pop Icon when I was shamelessly watching VH1!'s Paris Most Shocking Momemts of the past decade when the story line got to the day Paris' sidekick was hacked into well..guess what..Gavin's pic was plastered on the screen next to Paris with that smile plastered on his face or is it he was plastered and was smiling...go figure.
I can't vote for Gavin or I won't vote for Gavin and I don't think you should either
Simply...Gavin has stated over and over that he LOVES san francisco yet unlike BOS candidates who pledge to only receive donations from residents and businesses in SF Gavin takes his money from New York and LA ..what San Franciscans money isn't good enough for him?
Dearest ThatChick,[11]
Don't fret about watching VH1. We all have our foibles. Mine is watching The People's Court every day.
As far as voting for Gav, of course you should! What are the other options, Joshie Wolf? He's not as cute as Gav either. Please reconsider your no vote decision immediately!
That Chick,
So, people shouldn't vote for Newsom because he's popular? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense....
I'm sure you've never made any mistakes in your life, but I think normal people are entitled to them occasionally. Especially when they are of a personal nature, mostly unrelated to their job. I guess you figure Congress was correct in impeaching Clinton for actions stemming from his personal conduct too.
Gee, if Gavin would simply make a pledge not to run for Govenor in 2010 and finish his full term as Mayor he might get my vote...
Wait, didn't he lie to me before...oh right, he said there was a policy meeting which it turned out it wasn't I think you might remember the meeting where he stood up and said "the meeting will be next door tomorrow night and I will be there to answer your questions" and guess what Gavin didn't show and that mtg didn't answer anybody's questions (hint he said it in Feb o7)
Now I could drone on and on pulling up every factoid and statistic to try to convey my message, but I still will not vote for Gavin.
There is a lot of reasons, but mostly because Gavin try to do a magic trick at a Policy mtg and he was spotted pulling a card out of his pocket now I rather go for the bunny rabbit in a hat trick but presenting a PUBLIC Forum in which the residents can ask questions of the mayor and the Mayor pulls prescreened (hell prewritten) cards out of his coat pocket that is just a perverse misuse of the Public's trust and misrepresentation of a public meeting.
and I don't forget the "other woman is the culprit" comment from his current paramour just narrows my vision even more..what Gavin was helpless and he couldn't think for himself..now is that the man you want for Mayor ooohhh puhlesse vote for him!
Well, I guess if you don't like him cause he can't keep track of his schedule that well, okay. And if you think "public meeting" means he can't have anything prepared, I guess that's something maybe (public doesn't mean Q&A only AFAIK).
As for crap about his paramours, I don't understand why that should matter at all. Again, it seems very much like Clinton, where people who are against him bring up his personal life, as if that is somehow a failure in his public office. Personally I think how he executes his duties as mayor are far more important than complaints about his behavior outside of work. It's perhaps a tad dissapointing that he isn't perfect, but I think I can live with that.
But whatever. It's fine with me if you don't vote for him, and it's alright if you try to convince others to do the same. The thing I objected to was the "hating" - bagging on his personal misfortune. Something like "you shouldn't vote for him because he cut public assistance" is very different from "Gavin threw out his back, ha ha! Bet he tried to hit on Alyssa Milano too." Why can't folks just critique his job performance? The petty stuff here on SFist is just sad.
Okay, you have beaten me to a pulp; don't whine about Gavin's pain or he being a pain in the ass whatever..
you've won, who else can run this city, who can do the work that he does (uh, excuse what does he do again...doesn't he own a resturant in St. Helena or is the Michela Alioto Pier) ...either way you have totally convence me..
I will vote for Gavin
I will vote for Gavin because he has done something about the Homeless situation..oh wait wasn't Homeless Connect a pilot program that Alex Tourk started ...mmm okay
I will vote for Gavin because he supports Marriage equality..wait, has he testified or submitted bills at the Mayoral conference to further the legality of what he did...uh no, Mark Leno has been doing the leg work on that well okay...
I will vote for Gavin because he supports Unions he walked the picket line in 2005..uh since the Unions haven't endorsed the Health Plan and there is still a few unions with shaky contracts including the hotel workers uh okay..then
I will vote for Gavin
Because...because...
Okay I am out of reasons you got any that are valid?
