SFist Finds: Hyper-Sensitive Poverty of Imagination

bookstore-note.jpg
Submit your Bay Area finds to found [at] sfist [dot] com or tag them as SFist and found on Flickr. Let us know where and when you found the item and any other interesting info.

This letter was found in 2004 by SFist reader smallerdemon. It was posted near a window of a downtown bookstore that had books by black authors on display.

Some Thoughts

Is it my hyper-sensitive poverty of imagination or is your book display "racially" segregated? Are you trying to make the window resemble the community? --

How radical would it be to mix it up?

How radical would it be if bookstores were so busy selling books they didn't have the time or the need to group and display them to draw peoples' attention to them, to get people to talk about them and read them, because all on their own, they sought out stories of all kinds, these people eager to see the world through different eyes, people not needing anyone to jog them from their small and limited view?

And how awesome would it be if there were enough readers to support a bunch of cool small bookstores like Alexander Book Co. (which I'm guessing this note is referring to, since they carry an extensive selection of African-American authors), each with their own lovingly selected specialty areas, instead of a few big stores promoting the same few titles?
