We Read The Weeklies

wrtw626.JPGLast week's winner, the Bay Guardian! Oh, Tim Redmond, we're so sorry to hear about your dad. [Moment of silence.] Okay. The Guardian's with Daly on the budget. They got a letter from someone saying Ed Jew is innocent. More info on the layoffs at the Merc News. A man with psychiatric problems gets no help from the city. More people upset with Newsom's proposed budget. They're going to crack down on pot clubs -- watch out, Ed Jew! Do you want to help Annalee Newitz run her blog? Sonic Reducer on Harry and the Potters. Cover article: Looking for the next cult revival star. Cheryl Eddy on Sicko. And Ed Jew's (.pdf) horoscope!: "In order to make the little details worth your time, you've gotta make sure they pay off in the long run."

Next up, let's say the San Jose Metro. Hillary Clinton is not doing very well fundraising in Silicon Valley. Eco-trendiness is getting kind of old. What exactly does it mean to be a sanctuary city for immigrants, anyways? Cover article: a fascinating article about garbage and recycling collection in San Jose. 3-D sci-fi movies of the 80s! Take the summer music festivals quiz. And non-Chinese food in Cupertino.

After the jump: The SF Weekly, the East Bay Express, and the Weekly of the Week!

The SF Weekly: An angry letter about the Weekly's coverage of the Gendercator dust-up at Frameline. Matt Smith goes YouTube on the iPhone. It's the last Ask Ephraim the Track Bike column -- ha, "Mildly Racist Bastard"! How come Newsom hasn't done anything about Prop M either? The DA screwed up an investigation into the murder of a local rapper two years ago. Something gross is getting in the water from Fisherman's Wharf. Cover article: A very detailed set of articles about Internet radio under attack. Also, we are totally going to check out this Pandora Radio that Hiya Swanhuyser raves about! Meredith Brody heads to DeLessio Market. SFist Ced points out she's been there once already. Summer insert, all about it being 40 years since the Summer of Love. Man, we are so glad we didn't live here during the Summer of Love -- all those hippies where Amoeba Records should be! A Twisted Sister DVD collection!! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH YOUR LIIIIIIIIIIIIFE??????? The Bouncer is in Scotland and misses us. And in Savage Love: a lady with two vaginas. Dang!

And the East Bay Express: Everyone's suing everyone over a landslide in Fruitvale. GOD, we love the East Bay blotter column, "Apprehension." We love it!!! A Jewish youth group's prank involving bacon -- we never see anything this good when we write our Blotter. New gay nightclub in Oakland. More on the Cal blogger's fight in small claims court we mentioned in Day Around The Bay last week or so. Cover article: Christians making trouble for Chinese students. Sampling the food at local farmers' markets. Music magazines that branch out into record labels. And the Bread Project, teaching cooking skills to low-income workers. (The Bread Project's cofounder was recently hit and killed by an Amtrak, we extend our condolences to them.)

Weekly of the Week: Wow, all the weeklies are really good this week. We can't decide! It's a super-close call, but we think we're going with the Metro, for the dish on Hillary Clinton's fundraising woes, plus the anti eco-trendiness article and the breakdown on the garbage scene. It was really close, though -- the Weekly's online music broadcasting series was running really close, and the other two were not far behind.

YTD count: SFBG: 8, SF Weekly: 7; EBX: 7, Metro: 4.

So Prop M is used as an excuse to dismiss panhandling tickets? What a scam.

The letter in SFBG defending Ed Jew was written by a consultant whom Supervisor Jew had hired during his campaign. This doesn't disqualify the man from expressing his opinion, but let us consider the source. (Not that the letter is terribly persuasive anyway.)

I want to hear all about everyone's Pandora stations! What do you put into them? What do you get out? At the moment, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists Radio is playing me a lot of Moldy Peaches and a little Gillian Welch.
