I agree.... free beverages/food are for startups that can use that to motivate fresh kids out of college to work ridiculous hours

Being a city employee, I tell you that the bottled water is the closet thing to a "perk" that we get.

you're kidding, right? Have you worked in the private sector, ever? Fucking free bottled water?

sure, lots of companies do free beverages for workers, but it's not something I'd ever expect or demand, and it's more a small biz thing than anything else, if you ask me.

I don't think it is the cost... it is the environmental impact of all of these plastic containers. Good for San Francisco.

I should have written "Professional jobs WITH the City seem to start at $60k... that's hardly taking a cut."

I'm sorry, but the public sector pays a lot better these days ... especially considering the retirement benefits/pensions that we never see in the private sector anymore ... Professional jobs in the City seem to start at $60k.. that's hardly taking a cut.

Bring your own thermos of water.

SF should just bottle it's own tap water and sell it at a cost. Again, many people buy bottled water for the convenience of the container and/or the fact that it is cold. SF could save in the transportation costs of normal water, and any proceeds (if any) could go to fund other city projects. If "residents can purchase up to 1,000 gallons of tap water for the price of one gallon of bottled water", there is a pretty darned good chance that there is a profit margin somewhere in there!

Being a city employee, I tell you that the bottled water is the closet thing to a "perk" that we get. I understood I would have to give up some luxuries when I got into the public sector, but I never imagined having to go to the bathroom to fill up my water glass.

If Gavin can give jobs to his mistresses, he can keep the bottled water.

This is a good move, ya gotta admit.

One of my roommate's buddies was appalled when he asked me for water, and I went to the sink and filled the glass with tap water for him to drink. He asked, "Don't you have bottled water?" I said, sure, that stuff is coming out of a keg of Peregrino ... drink up Los Angeles wienie.
