The Last Swells By The Numbers
Hey -- we're not doing our usual light-hearted romp through the Swells society column this weekend, because we've got sad news. The doyenne of Swells, Catherine Bigelow, announced in this week's column that she's been asked to take the Chron's "voluntary buyout package," so this is it for your mathematically-inclined socialite review.
Best of luck to you, C.Big, and we know you'll end up on your feet, tripping the light fantastic, and we hope you'll tell us all about it when you get there! We'll miss you very much.
So here's your melancholy last Swells By The Numbers. We've had fun compiling these too.
Number of people pictured in today's Swells by the Numbers: 99.
Number of people pictured whom we recognize: 4 (A friend of ours won an award for her work againsty domestic violence! Also, Kamala Harris, and our very last Dede Wilsey. Regretful sigh.)
Minority count: 11 (11.1%).
Getty v. Traina: 0-1.
Number of years C.Big was with the Chron: 12.
Your numbers for Swells by the Numbers's entire run, after the jump.
Our last picture of Dede Wilsey ever, by Thomas J. Gibbons for the Chron.
Number of Swells By The Numbers columns: 42.
Getty v. Traina, the grand totals: 116-118. The Trainas had one day when 30 people got in the column, though (it was Trevor's post-wedding party).
All-time Getty high: 11, on March 4, 2007 (Ann Getty had donated jewelry to the Legion of Honor's museum show about jewelry).
Your average Getty v. Traina count: 2.76 : 2.81.
Number of Gavin Newsom appearances: Alas, we never kept a good count of Gavin appearances alone, so we can't give you a definitive number. It was probably about 65% of the Gettys, though, so we'll guesstimate 75.
Your overall minority count: 299 (11.2%).
Average number of minorities a week: 7.12.
Highest number of minorities in any one week (absolute) : 24, on March 18, 2007. (there was a party at the Museum of the African Diaspora).
Highest percentage of minorities in any one week: 30.1%, on Feb 11, 2007 (party at the Asian Art Museum).

Man, what a shame. Best of luck, C.B.
Nooooooooooo!!!
thanks to you, Swells had become my favorite part of the Sunday Chron! Well, after Neva Chonin, anyway. Whatever will do without our weekly dose of Dede Wilsey? Getty v. Traina? Sigh. Truly the end of an era.
Great. They lose another talent at the Chron, then wonder "Gawrsh, why is no one reading our paper?"
Then they blame the internet.
Maybe they'll hire Beth Spotswood as her replacement?
Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!! is right, Fresnoist. I am sad to see CBig and Swells go, too.
