Nope, Chris didn't learn a damn thing from this week's reaction to his childish behavior and personal vitriol. That's too bad.

I've been staying at the Century Plaza Hyatt in Los Angeles for work these past couple of days, and lo and behold they are having the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting at that very hotel this weekend.

Yep. Our Gavin was there. No doubt he was thankful to be out from San Fran & schmoozing with other politicians.

I saw him in the hotel lobby and was tempted to ask him for a photo (for the record, he was wearing his powder blue tie today) but I didn't have the guts to bust in on his entourage.

I'm glad Chris blogged about what he really said. The Bay Guardian also wrote that the media have misrepresented what Daly said and apparently they (the BG) were there so they know first-hand. Unfortunately I don't expect the corporate media to issue a correction.

This is an excerpt of what they wrote:

QUOTE:

For those few running dogs of the press who actually hung around for Tuesday night's four-hour hearing on proposed cuts to public health programs, Sup. Chris Daly's comments on Newsom's substance abuse problems seemed, well, entirely appropriate. As the two reporters who were actually there know full well, Daly's speech, which lasted eight minutes, only spent 30 seconds referring to allegations of Newsom's cocaine use...Acknowledging the applause from the 300-plus crowd, Daly said, "I think you’re applauding because this isn’t the first time you’ve been called out to a hearing to talk about budget hearings. It's backwards how we do our budget. The needs of the least fortunate should be met first, not last."Referring to Newsom's latest budget, which proposes a $2 million reduction to substance abuse programs, Daly asked, "And where does Gavin Newsom get his substance abuse treatment?"
And it was in this context--the noting that Newsom has targeted programs that help people with cocaine and meth problems--that Daly added, "while the Mayor artfully dodges allegations of cocaine use."
Of course, a full summary of Daly's speech was not printed by the dailies, the next day. Instead, The Chronicle misquoted Daly as having accused Newsom of doing cocaine, and the Chronicle and the Examiner have since devoted hundreds of words covering the Mayor's reaction to something that Daly actually never said.
What's been missing from all this coverage is what Daly and the people who attended the hearing really talked about. And it's an interesting omission since, in reality, Daly's rousing speech marked the beginning of the progressives' budget comeback. A much needed comeback after a bumpy start in which Daly tried to get his progressive colleagues on the Budget Committee to restore housing and health care funding to the Mayor's budget by making cuts that were so widespread that Newsom was able to energize his reelection troops for a budget rally field day, and Daly got bumped as Budget Chair.

END QUOTE

I would like for one moment to avert your view to the photo here. The best quote of the day is visual.

I love the that all you worthless progressives are blaming the media for Daly' meltdown. Get a fucking life and start accepting responsibility for your own and your washed up loser of a leaders actions.

On the budget, I just read how we spent 186mm on the Homeless last year, 680mm on Education. Doea anyone else have a huge problem with this????

We should not be spending shit on the Homeless until every School in this town is a model for what Public Education can be and the Private Schools cannot compete anymore for the kids.

Stop the insanity!!!!!

Coke and sleeping around are par for the course in the restaurant biz even among the wait staff. I've seen people screwing in the walk-in freezer all jacked up on blow. Let's see , Gav was the hot young owner of the place?? No surprises here.

Awww, thanks Jerry for the compliment on the photo.

San Francisco is a great urban environment to be in, but also has its great nature escapes.
It's the best of both worlds. ;)

Disclosure:
I took the photo.

Delusions continue...

Kudos to Newsom for ending the fiscally wasteful and environmentally damaging practice of buying bottled water!

This is true:

"the bottled water industry has had profound negative environmental effects, Newsom said, its plastic bottles requiring oil to produce, and releasing one billion pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year."

Kudos on the photo, it is great. Daly is an ass

I saw recently that Colin Fletcher, the author of The Complete Walker has died.

All men who explore deplore,
That frustrating hurdle, the girdle.

#101 - "Kudos to Newsom for ending the fiscally wasteful and environmentally damaging practice of buying bottled water!"

Yes, I was very pleased to read that too. The bottled water industry is such a racket.

So there's no news on Ed Jew, I take it?

Why is it that the pro-Daly comments are generally rational, while the anti-Daly comments are generally reactionary and vitriolic? I know SF is rife with bleeding-heart liberals, but why don't the critics represent their views more respectably? I'm disappointed at the imbalance of the debates here. Maybe that's because serious conservatives just don't frequent SFist? Probably... why would they?

[14] Taran,

Serious conservatives don't frequent San Francisco either.

With respect to Dalys' comments about Newsoms drug usage he should be very careful aboot what he says.It very well may backfire on him.
Chris Daly is no angel.Just ask the head of Narcotics SFPD.

For those who took the time to watch the SFGTV video of the Board meeting of what Chris Daly really said (as opposed to what's been reported by the corporate media that he said), after he spoke you will see that Chris got a standing ovation, at least from those in attendance in view of the camera. I didn't hear any "boos" to what he said.

#16 George, speaking of being "very careful," you should have said "Newsom's ALLEGED drug usage."

And really, most people seem to have completely missed the point of what Chris was getting at.
Has anyone bothered to read what Chris wrote or do most people like a bunch of sheep take SFGate and the Chronicle's word for it? (Both are anti-Daly by the way).

QUOTE FROM DALY:

I spoke for at least 8 minutes highlighting the Mayor’s proposed cuts before mentioning that the Mayor has “artfully dodged” questions about allegations of his own cocaine use. I did not accuse the Mayor of using cocaine. I merely pointed out the contradiction that Mayor Newsom, who has admitted to his own substance abuse problems, would continuously propose major cuts to substance abuse programs for poor people.

The San Francisco Chronicle falsely reported on June 20 that, “Supervisor Chris Daly angrily suggested Mayor Gavin Newsom uses cocaine.” I take exception to the SF Chronicle and other media outlets for misrepresenting my statements and misinforming the public regarding my remarks at the Beilenson hearing.

I further challenge the press to cover the real news that should be alarming San Franciscans--- and that is not whether or not the Mayor has been doing cocaine--- but whether or not San Franciscans who are most vulnerable have access to proper health services.

END QUOTE

"why don't the critics represent their views more respectably?"

You should give that advice to the "trustfunded college dropout who got a sweetheart loan from his rich mother to make the down payment on his affordable housing priced condo" Chris Daly.

#18 Smuch,

Before that advice is given to Daly (not that he needs it as far as I'm concerned!), why don't you heed it?...considering what you wrote I would certainly not call "respectable." It's more like what one would read in the National Enquirer if they were to do an article on Chris Daly.

What you wrote---all of which I'm not even sure is true---has to do with Daly's personal life. And I remember it was the Newsom supporters who were saying all during the Newsom sex scandal that Newsom's behaviour in his personal life had nothing to do with how he was doing his job as mayor.

It's interesting how many people's attention span simply can't stay on topic which was good health services for the poor. Again, that was the point of what Daly said.

I guess you missed the first "around the bay" item "Hey! did you ever do coke with gav".

For the past few months sfist has been obsessed with a certain blue tie and the fashion choices of Jennifer S.

These are far less important to the skill of governing than pointing out where a certain supervisor comes from. One who explodes and verbally abuses people, to the point the DSM should be referenced, when he doesn't get his way. One who lacks the concerns that many of us have, for instance the quality of San Francisco public schools, he will have the option to send his kids to private school paid for by his parents. One who has been trying for months to plant rumors about the mayor's personal life ala Karl Rove (I'm not talking about the M&R article today, but one that a friend of mine was trying to spread at a party 3 months ago).

It is uncanny how much Chris Daly's actions and sealing himself off from his broader base of constituents' opinions is so similar to our Worst President Ever and his administration - kinda like a combo of the worst behaviors of George W. Bush (The Decider - we're not leaving Iraq just because 70% of Americans want us to leave Iraq) and Dick "Let's go hunting" Cheney (Go F*** yourself!).

Please, for a moment, can we go back to the first comment ... I have always wanted to know how to do a "degree" symbol. I get steps 1 & 3 but what is "deg"?!!! Is it the letters D+E+G? That isn't working.
