A panoramic view of Hayes Valley reflected off of a Porsche Cayenne (Old Norse for fast minivan). It has a license plate holder instead of a license plate. Why's that?

You've seen these license plate holders around, typically on a fast German car. Mmmm. To be clear, the organization itself has a straightforward purpose. The problem is with a perception that members might get favorable treatment from the police. Like this: "11-99 Foundation License Plate Frame - Culture of Corruption?" "Buy a cop today?" Ouch. In response to this type of critcism, the Foundation has modified its ways. Like this: A police charity moves to exit the fast lane.
So that's the mystery. Do these license plate holders (in conjunction with the ID cards) get people out of speeding tickets they would otherwise get? Mmmmm. People who drive fast in $100k vehicles might view another $1800 to join the Foundation (the cost from a few years back) with the benefit of lessening the odds of getting a ticket as more useful than some other options. Like the one Porsche offers for $2160 called Air Vents Leather, which covers the vents that blow air on your face with color-keyed leather. If we were Paris Hilton, we know which choice we'd make. Or, you could roll like Apples' Steve Jobs, who seems to do just fine driving around for months without any license plate holder or license plate. Don't try that with your Hyundai.

Oh most definitely - the license frame holder at least tips the scale in favor of someone with it, than someone without it. Of COURSE the CHP will be more lenient to someone who donates to their widow and orphans fund (a worthwhile cause, but totally not the point). How stupid for people to claim that their donation's intent is totally selfless, and that they just want to show people that they are supporting the cause. What about the other causes they donate to? Do they put bumper stickers all over their cars for those, too? I think not!
I don't know if having a Surfrider Foundation license plate frame protects me from becoming a yummy little neoprene-encased snack for Ole Whitey, but if it doesn't, I'll let you guys know.
Oh, that's good! How about if I had a license frame supporting the SF Symphony, that protects me from having to listen to hip-hop and rap music?
Giving to charity should be anonymous. No ifs or buts. Give, shut up. Doing otherwise makes you an attention seeking prick.
I used to work as a country club valet and these license plate holders are on all the fast cars. And the people who have them aren't the kind to spend any money, let alone $1,800, if they aren't going to get something substantial in return.
If I did write the owner of a car with this license plate frame, and they were an 11-99 Member, my lieutenant would make sure the ticket never made it to the court. Nice corrupted dept. for certain nowadays, glad I retired!
Did anyone of you click on the link and read the article about the 11-99 foundation from 12/2006?
I think not! I can tell by all the trash being talked up in this blog, that you didn't bother.
I am a CHP Officer (11 years). I have had many run ins with 11-99 plate owners. Some have been polite, some have been verbally abusive. All those that deserved citations all received citations for their moving violations. Just like all the other drivers I have had enforcement contact with. Those that received citations and chose to be hassle free through the enforcement stop were released without incident and I have never seen them again. Those that weren't, were reported to the foundation. Yes, it has always been the Foundations own policy to report these members. The Foundation would take their I.D. cards, their plate frames were confiscated and they were removed from the foundation.
Not all members of the 11-99 foundation donated monies to help the survivors of fallen CHP officers so that they could get out of speeding tickets. I would like to think that those individuals were smarter than that. But, I can guarantee that those that did, most likely are no longer members. Their huge egos, poor attitudes and their high flying sports cars have long since burned themselves out of the foundation.
Am I thankful for what the foundation represents to me and my family if the need should ever arise? You bet I am. And...I'm sure the members of the foundation are just as thankful for what I represent to them if the need should ever arise.
You shouldn't let a few bad pieces of fruit ruin the bunch.
I don't think that all the people that don the surfrider plate frame are a bunch of pot smoking, racist, wastoids. That would be wrong now wouldn't it? (Oh, by the way...Not all CHP Officers are White.)
or
for those that put the KQED educational channel plate frames or stickers on their cars are a bunch of hoytee toytee, snobby symphony attending, over achieving, Nerds? That too would be wrong wouldn't it?
It all comes down to a few things...Yes, it is up to the Officer as to who he/she will cite. However, you, the violator play the biggest part of our influence towards our decision. Here are a few little suggestions...so carefully pay attention...
1.) How crazy-dangerous or amount of speed over the posted limit were you? Don't speed and you won't get pulled over and always be sure to wear your seat belt.
2.) "Attitude is Altitude" A good attitude MAY help you soar out of a ticket, and a poor attitude WILL cause you to crash and burn.
3.) Politeness can go a VERY long way. And yes it is in a different category than attitude.
4.) Being Apologetic can also help tilt the scales to your favor. Why? Because you did make me have to risk the safety of the other drivers and myself to catch up to you and stop you.
So, I would sincerely ask you to please get your facts straight before jumping to conclusions. It helps keep making an ASS out of U and Me! It also helps keep worthless blogs like these from being typed up and pasted on the computer.
Thanks,
From a friendly CHP Officer.
I'd like to make a comment about this. I was at an event this past weekend and saw not a few but many cars with these frames. I was curious about the foundation and started doing some research, that's how I cam about this blog.
A comment to Paul:
There are a number of ex and current CHP officers involved in the event that I attended. My comment is about a citation that I received that I did not beleive was justified at the time, and upon relection, still don't think was justified. I support the CHP any way I can. All of the things you mention, I thought I did. It did not stop me from receiving the citation when I
1. Had no attitude.
2. Was polite, both my wife and I asked what I might have been doing wrong.
3. I was apologetic about the fact I might have been doing something wrong.
Now having said that I paid the ticket and am about to attend driving school. I did not contest the ticket, beleiving that I was just paying for the ones I did not get along the way of 30+ years of driving without one.
But sometimes you just feel like you are being singled out. I did not miss:
1. the other 8 police cruisers waiting in the parking lot of the intersection where I received the citation.
2. The fact that about a block earlier the speed sign was at the speed that my speedometer indicated and had been reduced after the location the officer said I was exceeding the speed.
3. The cruisers were setting about a half mile from where there was a weekend event of about 250 Porsches, yes those exotic, fast German cars.
4. The fact that I recieved the citation because at 6:30PM, in the rain and the dark, I might have endangered children in a park about a block away.
Oh buy the way, I was driving my wifes Hyudai Santa Fe and was not even in the Porsche. It was home tucked safely away in the garage.
I have the upmost respect and as said have a lot of friends both in and out of the club that are CHP officers. I still support the foundation and will probably donat both time and money any time I can.
Regards,
John
