Free Bulbs

Toss out your gaslamps, San Francisco, because Gavin wants you to get a FREE LIGHT BULB! WOW! In his latest newsletter, he's tipped us off to Yahoo's Be A Better Planet contest. The idea is that by clattering around on the internet talking about the color green, we can save the whales or something! Whatever, all's we know is that you get a free light bulb for signing up. As an added bonus, the front page features a picture of Haley Joel Osment in a red wig getting high off of some hallucinogenic ferns.

So what does this have to do with Gavin? Why's he suddenly pushing a Yahoo ad campaign that's disguised as greeniness but is actually just a trick to get us to use their websites? Why, no ulterior motive at all. He just LOVES the environment, and is willing to go to any length to promote its preservation -- EVEN SENDING OUT A NEWSLETTER!

Also, the city with the most signups wins a fleet of hybrid taxis.

The top two cities on that Yahoo site: Pelzer, SC and Dover, DE. Weird, no?

The entire compact lightbulb thing is silly. At night, when most bulbs are used, in California, we are producing 6,000 megawatts more power per hour than is consumed. That's a lot of greenhouse gasses, especially if the power is all produced by Natural Gas. Why do we do this? Beause you can't let the grid lose its charge. What happens to this power? It dissapates. Pooof!

See: caiso dot com slash outlook slash outlook dot html to see what I am talking about.

The only real solution is to have a baseline powersource that is non-carbon producing, AND it has to work at NIGHT. The only soltuion today is Nuke!
