Do It, Lumpy: The Progressive Convention

IMG_4925a.jpgIn the taunting words of non-progressive Pat Murphy: do it, Lumpy! We stopped by the Progressive Convention where basically, on a schedule running about 90 minutes behind, everyone who's anyone in local politics stopped by and, after some exciting build-up in the form of a campaign speech by Ross Mirkarimi..... -- no one ended up deciding to run against Gavin Newsom. As Calitics puts it: Exasperating.

Afterwards, a fellow blogger irritatedly reported that he had stopped by Gavin Newsom's coincidentally-same-timed rally up the street a little earlier, where Sean Elsbernd had told a snickering crowd, "I gotta leave soon, the progressives are down the street and they asked me to run for them since they can't find anyone to run against Gavin." We all groused about that, and then we were all basically like, "It's true." Maybe the progressives should get Elsbernd to run for them.

Since there's nothing to really report about the convention, we'll give you our impressions of the event itself, after the jump. Tidbits include: Frank Chu, green and blue beads representing the unity of the Green and Democratic parties, and the sex of the newest Daly-to-be! Also, some of the pictures everyone's been nice enough to send to us!

Picture of Daly inflating a balloon by SFist Jim. His pictures are sufficiently awesome that we're putting a bunch of them in another post after we finish this one.

DSCN0667.JPG--Wow, you put that many people in an elementary school cafeteria and it gets really warm. On the online side, we personally saw Greg Dewar; Fog Citys Luke, Elaine, and H.; Calitics Bob; Civic Center SFMike; Left in SF's Kim Knox; Beyond Chron Paul; beloved SFist commenter Jerry Jarvis (in a jaunty hat), SFist Jackson, and PartyParty Ted. On the actual newsprint side, the Weekly's Matt Smith, the Chron's Cecilia Vega, and Matier and Ross, sitting together and giggling like girls in a high school cafeteria.

--We're sure we missed some folks, as we see from the excellent submissions coming in on the SFist Flickr stream. Steve Rhodes! We totally didn't even see you!

--How does Frank Chu hear about everything? Frank Chu should cover those Monday and Wednesday SFist Tonight posts that we struggle with! (SFist Jenna, of course, is who Frank Chu consults about the lowdown on fun in the city!)

--We liked Ross Mirkarimi's new haircut. Also, we liked how the RUN ROSS RUN! chanting got mixed up with the ROSS! ROSS! ROSS! so it was like RUN-SS-ROSS-ROSS-RON-SS-RUN-ROSS. Very Ivesian. We're still mad he's not going to run, though. There's some audio that SFist Jim captured of the Run Ross Run madness, below!

mcgoldrick2007-06-02.JPG--Who is this guy with PartyParty Ted again? We .... can't recall! Ha! We've been laughing about our McGoldrick joke all afternoon.

--Expectant Sarah Low Daly's looking glowy -- they're having a girl! Mayoral nominee Jack Daly was asked where his sister was, and he pointed to his mother's torso.

--We liked how Carole Migden came out to the same music Barry Bonds uses when at-bat.

--Medea Benjamin spoke. Wouldn't it have been awesome if three Republicans had disrupted her speech with "STAY THE COURSE" signs?

--We met the woman who had that GO GAVIN GO! sign we put up on the site about a month ago, and she says she doesn't actually support Gavin and was holding up the sign at Newsom HQ ironically.

--We told Chris Daly, "Do it, lumpy!" (as a joke! We promised Sarah we would not encourage Chris to run for mayor in any way.), and he said, "hey, I've totally started working out again!" Aw, Chris! Don't let society dictate how you feel about yourself!

Green and Blue Beads at the Progressive Convention
Green beads and blue beads, for Dems and Greens working together. Awwww.

Here's Frank.

Chris compared the progressives to the Golden State Warriors, and then explained at great length what happened in the playoffs to the crowd.

In SF We Can Do Better
Kind of a double-edged statement, no?

All the crappy pictures by us. The shot of Ross Mirkarimi by Steve Rhodes and the "We Believe" Chris Daly picture by the always-in-the-right-spot-at-the-right-time SFist Jim.

I couldn't compete with all the pro cameras.I guess I am to grass roots for spending several thousands of green backs for that. Not that I got about 56 good pic's out of about 60.
But beside that I have to say this,Ross said that he wouldn't announce that he was running today.Get it.

Ross is a total tease.

Your pictures were awesome, Jerry! They were really great in reminding me who actually spoke.

I just ran out of room in the post was all, and was hoping to use your pictures for future SFist posts!

Thanks rita. But one day I will get a camera costing several green backs. But not through selling my work.I enjoy sharing them to much.

I looked up the word idiot in the dictionary and found a picture of Elsbernd next to the definition. What a tool. Sarah Low Daly for Mayor!

I have so many troll comments to make on this freak show my head will explode. But why bother since these losers just masturbated for five hours and still came up with NOTHING!!

This was at it's best. Our night in shining green is yet upon our bests.

user-pic

would of been more fairer had you of played the full speech of Ross.

Bunch of people who could actually make a difference in America if they didn't live in San Francisco.

I believe the convention was billed as a nominating convention not as a platform to announce candidacy.
And by the energized stomping and chanting of RUN ROSS RUN,by the majority of people,I believe the convention did what it was billed as.

Here is what I think we should all contemplate when choosing our next mayor and what we should all try to live by. A lovely woman says this about being progressive:

“When I think of what being a progressive means, I believe that it means you are not necessarily aligned with any one political party. Instead, you advocate and believe in policies that will raise up and help all people, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Being a progressive means that you take consideration of others’ situation, not just your own when formulating a policy. Similarly, a progressive believes in policies that enhance the collective good, rather than the good of a few individuals.”

Jerilyn Libby

Very well put James.Vote you heart.

Sounds like the event was even more boring than watching all the City's politicos go buy in the classic cars at the front of a big parade. Word to the politicos - blow your spew on YouTube, and hope folks watch ... at least we can fast forward to the good stuff.
