Whales Are Gone

13355732.jpg

Bright and early Wednesday morning, and searchers say it looks like the two hapless whales are nowhere to be seen. Did they swim out to the Pacific in the middle of the night? Or are they just wandering around lost somewhere else in San Francisco Bay? Don't put it past them!

Update: As of 11 a.m., volunteers have started taking down the whale command center units, as more and more people become convinced that Delta and Dawn are back in the ocean. If there are no reported sightings of them by the end of this afternoon, they're going to assume all's well. There's a few ships out in the ocean looking, and commercial ships have been asked to keep an eye out as well.

I sure hope they weren't euthanized. :P

Didn't they inject some kind of GPS tracking thing into at least one of the whales? I swear I read that somewhere. So why are we guessing as to their whereabouts?

Hi Cooper -- I didn't manage to work it into any of the posts, but there was some kind of mechanical failure with the GPS tag they tried to put on the mother whale, so she's unmarked as of now.

They were going to try and put the tag on again if the whales hung out in the Bay for a few more days, but since they seem to be gone, no one's too worried about it.

(also, Tinman, I've been laughing hysterically about your comment above all morning, people in my office are wondering what's wrong with me.)
