Opera in Dolores Park and Free Classical Music

operapark6.jpgOver the long week-end, we thought we'd take in some art as the SF Opera performed gratis in Dolores Park. It was so cold that, up on stage, it ended up looking like a scarf fashion show at Macy's. And now, showing off a pastel pink cashmere pashmina, please welcome Susan Graham! For those who were hoping to ogle on some decolleté, well, no cleavage for you, perv.

We even took a few pictures, that you'll find below the jump. If you want a not-exactly-rain-but-not-good-weather-either-check, there's plenty opportunities: first, the warm and toasty Opera House on Van Ness will start its summer season this Saturday. Head here for the run down on that. For the free stuff, go below.

There's plenty more opportunities to see the SF opera for free:

  • on June 22nd, you'll be able to see a free simulcast of Don Giovanni inside the comfort of a nice auditorium, in four different locations: Zellerbach Hall at Berkeley (510) 642-9988; the Mondavi Center, at UC Davis (530) 754-2787; the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts, in Santa Rosa (707) 546-3600 and right downtown in the YBCA Theater at Yerba Buena Gardens (415)978-(ARTS) 2787. For more info about the simulcast, click here.

  • if you find the concert rooms to be too small for you, the SF Opera will provide another free simulcast next season in partnership with the SF Giants (that baseball team): a broadcast of Samson and Delilah at AT&T park (the cute baseball stadium by the bay). Will they cover the giant coke bottle (is the coke bottle even still here?) with a chardonnay label, to make it more audience appropriate? Heck no! Opera is for everybody!

  • if you find concert rooms to be too big for you, you can listen in your bathroom on the first Sunday of the month on the radio at FM102.1 KDFC, at 8pm. Next performance, this Sunday, Joan of Arc.

  • On August, 19th, you can take in the SF Opera at Stern Grove. Program should be here eventually. Also, the SF Symphony will present its own free concert in the Grove on July 8, James Gaffigan conducting.

  • And that's not IT! On July 29th, you can see the Schwabacher Summer Concert of the SF Opera Merola program, for FREE, in the Yerba Buena Gardens, at 2pm. For info on this concert and the Merola program, check here.
  • Woaw. You won't ever have to pay for a music performance ever, or what.

But wait, we're tossing this in, just because we want satisfied readers:

  • how about a free SF Symphony concert for your lunch break downtown SF on Friday, August, 24? You got it, again in the Yerba Buena Gardens.

Ok, here are the pics of Sunday's performance. If they appear shaky, it's not because we took them with our phone camera, we just were shivering in the cold.

The seats for the big donors are reserved, they can show up at curtain time. For them, no claiming some Dolores Park real estate in the cold like we did.

Splendid diva Susan Graham, indeed wearing a pink scarf.

And the SF Orchestra. If they were cold, you could not hear it.
