We're sorry to pass along the news that a pedestrian is near death after having been hit by a car in the Nob Hill/Polk Gulch area at around 5:30 this morning.
The pedestrian was crossing California Street at Hyde when an eastbound car going up the California Street hill plowed right into him. Witnesses reported that the pedestrian rolled up onto the hood, and then fell off after the car hit the brakes. The car then sped off towards Leavenworth and beyond without stopping.
The car was described as either a gray Nissan or blue Toyota, and the authorities are looking for it. Call 415-553-1641 if you have any information.

Didn't that road rage murder on Valencia St happen at some weird hour too? Seems like other incidents like this also happen in the middle of the night...yikes, 2-5am is not the best time to be out walking the streets.
SFist is such a transportation oriented site. I'm wondering about the running total this year for Muni, bicycle and automobile caused pedestrian fatalities...Anyone?
this is really sad. that guy was cool. I used to buy my paper from him sometimes. it's one thing to have an accident, but to run away from the scene? that is really f*cked up.
You have to think about what this says about the driver community. I think Gavin should get the AAA to do something to control its members.
I really don't understand why these drivers are allowed to ride wild in the streets like this.
Oh Bikescape. Do you want to compare the percentage of car-drivers who run stop signs to the percentage of bike-riders who run stop signs? I don't.
1)
That's one block away from me! I can't believe I slept through what happened! How do you know it's the old guy from the newspaper kiosk, Greg?
2)
Why did they take the guy to S.F. General? St. Francis Hospital is less than 2 blocks away!
3)
Bikescape, the people who belong to CSAA (a membership-driven organization) are probably more thoughtful and regard the law more highly than your average hit & run driver. I have a CSAA membership card, I own a bike and I do not own a car.
don't worry bikescape, I got your joke, and it made me laugh.
I like to be dry but I guess that was a bit parched!

As long as these pedestrians keep antagonizing car drivers by walking out into the road like this, this kind of thing will continue. What do you expect? The road belongs to the automobile and the rest of you better just get off it.
blah... I must be thick. I didn't get the joke, B.S. :-(
MattyMatt- How about comparing the percentage of cars that exceed the speed limit to the percentage of cyclists that do?
who had the right of way? what color was the light. sorry to be so cavalier but if the guy walked in front of a car with a green light, like so many do in this town, i can't show him much sympothy, just like i wouldn't the bikes.
The pedestrian was probably taken to General instead of St. Francis because SF General is a designated trauma center and St. Francis may not be. So, General would be better equipped to take care of these sorts of injuries.
I used to live pretty close to where this happened, and walked all over that area, and it always seemed more dangerous for pedestrians than a lot of other neighborhoods. I know of at least 2 other pedestrian deaths in that general Nob Hill/Tendernob part of town in recent years. I know that I was almost run over on something like a weekly basis when I lived there. I hope this man recovers and they catch the culprit very soon.
Boy, it's a good thing he wasn't hit by a bicycle, right? I mean, those things are dangerous...
