We Read the Weeklies

865449.43.jpgHopefully, just in time for your lunch break, and no snarking on David Downs this week.

Last week's winner: the SF Weekly. Cover article: Treating Severe Mental Illness without Pharmaceuticals - a fairly well-balanced article about the issue. Matt Smith on Gavin Newsom's flaming coiffure - actually the story is about Newsom's proclamations about the dire need to do something about public housing in SF and his administration's failure to do anything, but Newsom's hair being on fire is a recurring metaphor. We learn a new term, "featherbedding." Divorces of the rich and powerful (not about the Mayor). Alternatives to myspace: choice quote: "I'd like to have just one place where I can meet artsy types, make business connections, and skeez on 16-year-old girls, but it's just not happening."

We totally failed to read the SJ Metro this week. Profuse apologies.

After the jump: the Guardian and the East Bay Express, the Weekly of the Week, and the YTD!

Next, the East Bay Express: Cover story: State Senate Boss Don Perata's lavish spending, but hey, at least he's supporting a lot of local businesses. This could be a reality TV show on public access! At least give Perata a guest spot on "Buy Curious," the shopping feature on the EBE's blog. Editorial on the new independent status of the Express (plus a full page "ad" with the text "Independently Owned and Operated Since 1:11 PM Thursday.") - we're happy for Kelly Vance getting to write movie reviews. Follow up to the UC Pension Plan story - UC Employees protest at a Board of Regents' meeting. A major donor to Perata's campaigns is getting mining rights to a quarry that could displace furry woodland creatures. Local old school ice cream parlors, and the I Like Eating cartoon on Ed Jew's favorite fast-food franchise, Quickly!

And the Bay Guardian: Cover Story: Mistah FAB's record label woes. SFPD and pot busts that are supposed to be low priority, but are happening anyway. More problems with Gavin's wi-fi plan, the wi-fi plan is the new public power, oh, there's an article about that too. The East Bay Express' newfound independence - sort of - it's still getting ads through Village Voice Media. (Hey! both the EBE and the Guardian had full color, full page ads for the new H&M opening in Stonestown today.) We had trouble parsing the first paragraph of Kimberly Chun's Sonic Reducer column, and struggled with the transition into the rest of the article about peak concert-going experiences. The horoscopes are the same as last week, and we had some serious problems with the crossword puzzle - not a banner week for time-wasting features in the SFBG.

Weekly of the Week: Independently Owned and Operated since 1:11 PM - woo hoo - it's the East Bay Express, which promises to write more about Oakland (and we hope, promote fewer community theater productions in the nether regions of CoCo County).

YTD count: SF Weekly: 7, SFBG: 6, EBX: 6, Metro: 3.
