As we all know, cars are the worst things ever invented, and owning one makes you a terrorist. Fortunately, it's easy to go carless in SF -- we tearfully gave our beloved station wagon to KQED a few years ago, and the absence of insurance payments, repair bills, and gas stations made us feel like we'd won the lotto. The only catch: SF's delightfully idiosyncratic transit system has a bit of a learning curve, as you might've noticed.
Luckily, Liveable City is hosting a Livable City Reception: Car-Free Living Tips & Tricks. The wine-and-cheese reception -- fancy! -- boasts nationally recognized carfree experts, as well as local tipsters with loads of hints for getting around town without a owning burning deathmachine. It's tonight (Tuesday), from 6 to 8pm, at the Livable City/SF Bicycle Coalition offices. That's 995 Market Street (@ 6th), Suite 1550. Bike parking is available, obviously.

The only way to live in this city "carfree" is to also be child free.
If you have kids, you need a car.
kids=car? i don't get it. I know lots of folks with kids that live without cars.
There are many people who live in the city with a child and no car. I have two sets of friends with 2 kids each and no car though both could easily afford one.
i vote for the weed whacker as the most destructive force in the universe. weed whackers are the reason people move to the city--peace and quiet.
I'm still on the floor laughing from that first line :-)
I would guess that the "tips and tricks" involve either riding a bike or taking Muni.
Not having kids, I'm reluctant to assert that "car=kids" is a myth, but it's difficult to ignore the broad swaths of this world, rich and poor, that would seem to suggest otherwise. And I hate to bring up New York, but, well, "New York."
would be cool if someone video-recorded this...
for us suburbanites...
