It's Like Having Your Own Personal I-Team!

We like to compile these little time-lapses of the 33, since that's the bus we take to work every day. But would you like us to make one of your favorite route? Just say the word! If you think we can catch some Muni laziness -- such at the drivers in the above video, who intentionally bunch-up all evening long -- drop us a line and let us know of the lines to which we ought turn our cruel scrutiny. It's a little time-consuming to put together the videos, so it may take a day or two to assemble them.

The benefit of having such a video: you can point to it and say, "see, look there! I'm not crazy! Those drivers really are dreadful!" And don't forget to submit your complaints to Muni, too. Lately, SFist has been permitted some insider peeks at Muni's human resources, and we're cautiously optimistic that some folks actually do really care about responding to riders' complaints.

Hi Matt... How did you get this map to generate in the first place? Was it in a prior SFist posting or is your magic method top secret?

This is a least the second time that Mattymatt has insulted MUNI drivers on the same day that SFist has made an "Ask the MUNI Driver" post.

Hey Mattymatt if you read the todays post you would know that making statements such as "Those drivers really are dreadful!" isn't very helpful or true and is pointing the blame at the wrong people: the MUNI drivers not MUNI management. According to SFist's own helpful MUNI driver "MUNI drivers can be penalized for “running hot” – i.e., being AHEAD of schedule, but cannot be penalized for running BEHIND schedule." That rule was created by management not the drivers, but obviously explains why drivers tend to be late rather then early or on time.

Mattymatt why do you hate MUNI drivers?

be brave. be bold. be courageous.

do a time-lapse vid on all of the 38's myriad lines - the regular, the limited, the Ax and the last-but-not-least Bx.

we know you can do it!

Here's an explanation of how the movies are made.

By "those drivers are dreadful" I meant the drivers caught in the videos -- not every driver in the world. I'm sorry I gave the wrong impression.

Sadly, the 38s are not fully on NextBus yet. Soon. I'll do a video of what limited interface currently exists.

Thanks for the info, Matt. Actually I was looking how to bring up the "Live Map" feature, which I've now found by clicking around the NextMuni (sister / twisted stepchild of NextBus) website.

I am sure they are allowed to run behind, but not aheqad because of union rules. i.e. They banned penalizing late drivers, but the union didn't think of banning penalities on early drivers. The next contract will probably have fines for both. People, including people here, need to think. Every action has a consequence. Easiest thing is to believe in people. Heck... starting wage is $29/hour. More than a NYC cop which starts at $18.

Gosh do I hate MUNI. I used to live on Arguello Blvd between California and Geary and I was late to work almost every day because the buses rarely followed their schedule. At least once every week the 38BX would not show up at all during the 8-9am schedule and the next one would be packed to the gills and be 10 minutes late. Or for the 38 or 38L one empty bus would go by and then there'd be a 10 minute wait and then 3 or 4 would run back to back. It's not just the 38 line. I also used to live on McAllister near Fillmore. These buses are too full, don't show up, show up late, show up 1-2 minutes early or sit in traffic. What was supposed to be a 22 minute trip would often take 35-45 minutes. I called and wrote in to Muni at least once a week and always got the same reply: a driver called in sick or a bus broke down. Now excuse me but I have a hard time believing this would occur without any attempt at fixing things every week for the past 5 years that I've lived here. And BART is just ridiculously overpriced for its fares. Why is it $2 for a subway ride in NYC from one borough to another while a trip to Walnut Creek is what almost $4? Yes NYC is bigger - but that also means more distance as well as people. The MTA could charge more to go from Manhattan to say...Queens but they don't. And this is why there will be limited ridership or people jumping fares. Does anyone have any answers? I had to take the bus in Los Angeles- yes - for 3 months and that bus actually followed its schedule, crazy traffic and all.

****Please please pretty-please - make a map of the dreaded N Judah!****
I'll use it as an exhibit in the massive complaint letter that I'm writing to Muni.

No matter what anyone else says - there is nothing worse than the N in the morning on weekdays. I'm late for work *every* morning - even if I leave early to compensate for the unreliability of the N, I still arrive late to work, and my even-tempered boss is quickly (and understandably) losing patience. I know - boo hoo, poor me and everyone else on the N in AM - but it's never been as bad as it has been lately, and I've had the unfortunate luck to ride the N every weekday AM for the last three years.

I'll think you'll be suprised at results of the N map - you'll see how amazingly slow it is - and I'd love to include time statistics in my letter to Muni.

Thanks!
