We Read The Weeklies

sfw516.jpgLast week's winner, as picked by SFist Sara L, the East Bay Express! A very deep Dream Cartoon about George Bush getting eaten by a shark. The Oakland military school is not military enough. Inspirational stories of East Bay kids getting scholarships. Cover: A sweet Oakland family stuck in a nightmare bureaucratic lawsuit hell over a mudslide that destroyed their house. Tripe soup in Fruitvale. A soulless book about 90s punk, and more debate about misogyny in hip-hop.

And next up, the SF Weekly. Know why? Because SFist was voted READERS' CHOICE BEST BLOG!!!!! Yay! We're so excited! Thank you, SF Weekly readers! There's no link for the Best-Of readers' choice awards, but we did get a shoutout for Jennifer Siebel's meltdown and were referred to in the whole Peter Ragone hot mess too. Other Best Ofs of note include: best glory hole, best new neighborhood (NOPA, which is where Little Star is), Best Ninja Supply, Best Tandoori Fish, and Best Marching Band (the adjectival form of the word "Gomorrah" is used). The issue is pretty much just the Best-Ofs, but what more do you need? WE WON BEST BLOG!!!!!

After the jump: The Guardian and the Metro, the Weekly of the Week, and your year-to-date stats!

The Guardian: Tim Redmond's mind is still blown by Paul Hogarth's suggestion that the progressives just not run anyone against Newsom. Chris Daly is voting for Carole Migden. (Nothing inflammatory is said in this editorial, we regret to inform.) Bicycles are oppressed. Cover: conservative Warren Hellman gave PartyParty Ted some respect! The Guardian isn't quite sure what to do about that. Prince and Bjork are both in town this weekend -- you know, Prince starts his shows so late, you probably could make it through Bjork (Joanna Newsom opening) at Shoreline, drive up to the Orpheum, and still have an hour or two to kill before Prince hits the stage. Vote Joanna Newsom for Mayor! Hip-hop chess, Weird Fish, and a movie about head-butter Zinedane Zidane.

And the Metro: An angry letter-writer takes umbrage with a reviewer's use of the term "whitebread." Gary Singh at San Jose State, again. The San Jose District 4 gets personal with charges that one of the candidates' restaurant is filled with cockroaches and countercharges that the other one is a communist. Stevie Nicks fashion. Cover: It's summer! Hey, SFist Jon, check this out! (Ha! SFist Jon'll never read this far down in We Read The Weeklies) The Air Guitar Championships are in San Jose this year. Other things of note: Tiffany's coming to Santa Cruz, the Stanford Jazz Festival, and Ben Folds plays the HP Pavilion. We hope there's another Boston Pops-style fight! Dosas in Sunnyvale. The Children's Theater puts on Cats! Memory..... all alone on the pavement.... (or was it the moonlight? We can't be bothered to check.) Glamorous Mexican woman rocker Alejandra Guzman. And Straight Dope: what's the deadliest poison? (the dimethyl mercury sounded bad to us.)

Weekly of the Week: WE WON READERS' CHOICE BEST BLOG! Of course it's going to be the SF Weekly! The EBX article on the hill collapse was really good too, though -- and we're always pleased to see PartyParty Ted's name in print.

YTD count: SF Weekly: 7, SFBG: 6, EBX: 5, Metro: 3.
