In a weird sort of way, both the A's and the Giants are the same. Both teams feature great starting pitching, shaky bullpens, and anemic offenses. As a result, both teams always seem to be involved in one run games, leaving the pitchers absolutely no margin of error and the fate of the games usually in the hands of the relief pitchers.
Case in point, last night's games:
Royals 4 A's 3- The A's are so destined to play one run games that they can't even get past the lower than lowly Royals without it being white knuckle time. This time, the A's were up by a run and lost the game as the Royals scored two runs in the top of the ninth to win. Jack Cust, however, continues to be hotter than the Snorg Girl as he hit another home run in the eighth to give the A's a short lived lead.
Astros 2 Giants 1- Blah blah blah...great starting pitching...blah blah blah...no offense...blah blah blah...Giants lose... blah blah blah...great pitching wasted.

The Giants are 13th in total runs scored in the majors, and 8th in the National League. They're 15th/7th in batting average and 15th/8th in slugging percentage. These aren't spectacular numbers, but they are hardly anemic.
The Giants are 5-7 in one-run games, 3-1 at home and 2-6 on the road. Of those seven losses, five have been credited to the starting pitchers. Assuming that 0.500 is a reasonable target for one-run games, that's not too shabby, since a lot of those games have come on the road.
In a very vague way, you simply described baseball. Starting pictures are usually better than relievers, relievers usually finish games because, by the definition of their role, they didn't start. Most teams average somewhere in the same area of runs per year and margins are usually 1-2 runs. One run games are not exceptional unless you are in the eviable posiiton of being on a Dynasty Team which doesnt really exist right now. Some games are pitchers duels, others offensive see-saws, and sometimes it is a blowout. In the end one nights game can't define a team or season. They are both mediocre teams. That is why they are alike. You could have abbreviated this article with "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes.... it rains" - Nuke La Loosh
