Get To Work (And Get There Sweaty)

Do you think we can have just one day of bicycling that doesn't devolve into some kind of car-smashing riot, please? This Thursday: Bike to Work Day! A day to hop on your bike ... and then gasp and flounder and struggle, because you only ride once a year. Then, if your boss lets you out early, roll up to the Bike Away From Work Party at the Rickshaw Stop (155 Fell St @ Franklin) from 5-9pm. Helpful tip: you are permitted to ride your bike to work on days other than Bike to Work Day.

Muni's put together an info page, but their halfhearted map is in loathsome PDF. We went ahead and converted it to a format that you can actually use; you're welcome. (Or you can check out the Bike Coalition's googlemap.)

We can't wait to see what outfit Gavin's picked out this year. Will it be casual? Yes, probably.

The event's partially sponsored, whatever that means, by 511.org. We've already documented, in stupefyingly dull detail, 511's disinterest in bicycles and transit. (Months later, they still haven't fixed their broken links -- which means that if you're looking for maps of SF's bike routes, you're SOL.) So if you can't ride your bike to work, but still want to help, you can always write to 511 and ask them to fix their car-heavy, bike-light, transit-incompatible priorities. Maybe next year, 511 can do something meaningful instead of holding a poem-writing contest.

Does anyone know where the Mayor will be riding from on bike to work day? In the past, he has ridden to City Hall from the Ferry Building. According to the SFBC, he may be starting in Park Merced or Little Hollywood.

Check
www.sfbike.org/?btwd_vip
for where to meet the Mayor and the Supes who will be biking.
