Sorry this update is late -- we were stuck in the tunnel ourselves! Due to mechanical problems on an SFO/Millbrae bound train around 8 this morning, BART got about 30-45 minutes behind on the morning commute schedule in both directions. The jam should be cleared by now, anyways.
We also learned a new word, from the notice alerts they flashed on the Now Arriving screens at our BART station of origin as we waited for a train to arrive: did you know that area by West Oakland where all the lines cross each other is called the "West Oakland Wye"? That's apparently where all the bottlenecking happened.
We did really appreciate the frequent updating on the status of the traffic jam, and the repeated apologies for the jerky stop-and-start movement from our sincerely-sorry-sounding BART driver this morning -- particularly during the 10-15 minute delay in the tunnel (we went through about 3 songs on the iPod while waiting). Take heed, MUNI! Everyone loves an explanation.

I enjoy riding BART no matter what happens. I Heart BART. Lucky for me, my work has a great non-corporate culture which is results-driven and loosey-goosey at once. As in, European.
For the US to fix its problems, fixing corporations will be the #1 issue. Corporate culture relaxes, less road rage, fewer cars, more smiles, less -isms.

2. An object shaped like a Y.
Whatever happened to "Day around the Bay"?? Why was it moved form the morning to the evening?
The Oakland Wye is a definite choke point for BART. Since all trains travel through that one set of junctions, a problem there can potentially shut down the entire system. There has been talk over the years of building a bypass, potentially serving Jack London Square or Emeryville, but the incredible expense means it will likely never be built.
I didn't experience any delays myself traveling around the East Bay late morning, but it's good to hear they provided updates on what was going on (maybe some day Muni will do the same).
