Pretty nice when an area powerhouse (pun sort of intended) puts some money into public schools.
Pacific Gas and Electric has awarded 22 area schools a combined $108,500 for "for innovative solar science projects." Basically, PG&E, with these so-called "Bright Idea" grants, is to encourage young minds to think about alternative energy sources early on, in the hopes that a few of them will go on to pursue careers in the field. A total of $250,000 will ultimately be issued for the year; schools can apply for grants through Sept. 30.
We know that it's easy to be cynical when huge companies start giving out cash -- underlying motivations may be questioned, the relatively small amounts can be scoffed at whem compared to a school's budgetary needs, etc. We take the stance that it's better to give than not give. Shining a little light on how interesting alternative energy science can be? That's a good thing.

I am in general a big fan of corporate giving, but when you're dealing with a business that has a local monopoly on providing an essential service, doesn't that ultimately end up in our PG&E bills? It's not as if it's coming out of the pockets of the board of directors. And another thing -- what's with all of their ad spending? I know it's to improve their public image, but you know what would help more? Using all of that money to provide us with gas and electricy and lowering our bills!
