Political Junkie: Ambush!

388185163_8132e09748.jpg

Okay, we'll admit it. San Francisco local politics as of late has been, shall we say, BORING. Boring boring boring boring. No shouting matches, no chicken suits, no revelations from either underage drinkers or hyphenated-named wives of best friends -- it's been slim pickings. So how excited are we to hear that the simmering cauldron of rage that is the Gavin Newsom-Chris Daly rivalry is heating up!!!! YES!!!!!!

So, according to Left in SF: before Fake Question Time 5 yesterday (which seems to have been boycotted by pretty much every news organization in town), there was a rally at City Hall (.pdf) for children and families.

And how exciting! The mayor was there! Gavin Newsom, on his home turf, gives a rallying cry of a speech: why do families leave San Francisco, something's got to be done, let's build 3100 more units of affordable housing. Applause! Gavin leaves the stage so the next speaker can take the stage.

Next speaker, please! .....Uh oh! Did they say Chris...... DALY????

Chris Daly takes the mike. He thanks the organizers of the rally. And then he says, "I want you to know that Gavin Newsom is a hypocrite." AAAAAAAAAAAAH!! They look in the audience. Gavin has turned his back on the speaker. AAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!

After the jump: why's Newsom a hypocrite? And Newsom's return salvo, scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Yay! SF politics is fun again!

Picture of Gavin supporter from the Newsom reelection website.

Daly then launches into his speech, which is all about how Newsom says he supports affordable housing but then vetoes Daly's budget, which was actually going to pay for affordable housing. Blah blah blah, we need a better mayor, let's get a progressive candidate, I'm having a progressive conference, there's going to be an announcement on June 2.

We only say blah blah blah because you know at this point if we'd been at this rally, we'd totally be looking for the steam coming out of Newsom's ears and a little whistle going off over his head. And Gavin did not disappoint!

Left in SF (the only news source that appeared to be on the scene for this) says that numerous sources are saying that Gavin was indeed "extremely upset" about the upstaging -- and that Gavin spent the speech shaking his head in disgust, while also being besieged by student advocates about why his administration has defunded school-to-work programs in the school district. (He says he's going to look into it.)

Left in SF is worried that Daly's antics will hurt the kids. That's because Left in SF is a nicer, more thoughtful blog than SFist's Political Junkie!

Returning salvo, Mr. Newsom? Well, you can't say Gavin doesn't give as good as he gets -- if you look at the Act Locally SF Newsom reelection campaign website, they're encouraging all of Gavin's supporters to show up tomorrow for a rally in favor of the Google-Earthlink wifi plan, and then to go offer testimony in favor of the program at the 2 p.m. Budget and Finance Committee meeting on the topic that Chris Daly is chairing.

Will Gavin be there too? And hey, if he is, can you guys just make that Board of Supes meeting into a Question Time? That would rule. Yay! San Francisco politics is fun again!

Hypocrite? Daly's even worse than Newsom. Daly got himself a below market rate condo then voted to get on the ballot a raise as a supervisor.

His salary jumped from about $38,000 to $120,000 within a year of his condo purchase. He should give it back and buy a market rate condo.

And I sure wish my mommy and daddy could give me $80,000 for a down payment and they could afford to send me to an elitist college that I could drop out of after taking my one women's studies class like Daly got to do. How do you think he supported himself while being a "community activist"/bully?

Chris Daly is more of a hypocrite than Newsom will ever be. Newsom got lucky having wealthy friends -- from what I understand he was raised by a single mom after a divorce and got a scholarship to go to Santa Clara University playing baseball.

Jesus, is "cranky" the new Peter Ragone handle or what? The Santa Clara University scholarship was paid for by one of the local San Francisco gangsters, Walter Schorenstein I believe, and Gavin has been groomed by the Getty family for higher office since his father became the family factotum long, long ago.

There are plenty of "poverty pimps" in this town, including the Reverend Cecil Williams, Catholic Charities, and any number of other individual organizations who rake in millions from the government (that's you and me, folks) while tending to the less fortunate, but Chris Daly doesn't happen to be one of them. So I see zero hypocrisy.

As for Newsom, he's a hollow man full of a lot of hot air. And Rita, you're a world-class s--t-disturber, god love you.

I don't know who the "Go Gavin Go" girl is, but if I were Gavin, she'd be my next appointments secretary. Speaking of more serious matters, why in heck is there a link to Gavin's reelection website on Alex's Ground Floor site?

Well, I was there yesterday, and when the Coleman Advocates MC asked Newsom if he'd support their family housing agenda, he almost said no, but then she added "or put in the pipeline by 2010" and then he said yes.

So kinda hypocritical, but kinda not.

The mayor might have also been upset by the fact that he got upstaged by the weather--a tent pavilion got picked up by the wind and the crowd mobilized to keep it from flying away and hurting someone. And of course Daly capitialized off this by saying it must have been all of Newsom's "hot air" or a comment by mother nature on Newsom's stance.

Ross Mirkirimi (Supervisor McHottie) was also amusing, saying he'd "move heaven and earth" to make it happen. He promised to be concise, but went on so long that they had to tactfully get out the hook.

During my first reelecion campaign, I was attacked on the internet for my home purchase. The attacks died when I had the deed restrictions on my unit and related paperwork from the Mayor's Office of Housing posted.

101 Valencia was built as a below market rate first-time homebuyer development in the 90's, but the resale restrictions related to cost were lifted before my family purchased in 2001. We paid the market price. While the Mayor's Office of Housing retains the right to match any accepted offer for purchase at 101 Valencia, I don't believe they've ever exercised it. My family qualified for the City's second mortgage program, but we did not utilize that or any other program.

Sorry, cranky. Your research skills need improvement.

And your wife needs to wash her mouth out with soap. Again, you used your position to get into that place in the first place. Oh and by the way, it's tough to research your purchase because you changed the way you are listed on the deed at the Assessors office. It seems to be under your wife's name -- nice way to hide assets.

And if you dare attempt your next goal of removing term limits, I'll really get cranky.

While you are pretty far off-topic, cranky, I will correct you one last time.

My position actually was to my disadvantage, as it caused me to not access a City program that I was otherwise eligible.

I have never changed any records regarding my home at the Assessor's Office.

I am in favor of term limits and against the proposal to extend term limits for SF Supervisors.

I have the best wife, and she's always first.

Your opposition research has gotten you nowhere. Thanks for playing.

cranky: ahahaha, Supervisor Daly has got you there, please come back when you have a valid criticism and for the love of god back it up with some evidence.

Hi Chris Daly,

Uh, one question why didn't you put a copy of your speech on the daly blog?

Okay, second question when I get back to California could I be the editor for your blog? I need a job and rent is due June 1st.

Last one I promise, okay if I can't be the editor of your blog, could you refer me to maybe an open position at Girl's Club?

Sincerely, tongue in cheek That Chick.

Please note that Mr. Anti-Condos has publicly admitted that he owns a market rate condo in this here website. Hypocrite indeed.

"While the Mayor's Office of Housing retains the right to match any accepted offer for purchase at 101 Valencia, I don't believe they've ever exercised it."

exactly. this is where the shady dealings happened. i heard (rumorrumorrumor) shaw/haaland threatened every supe and relevant city employee by saying no labor group wopuld ever support any of them again if they investigated. also daly was kicked out of duke. why not ask him how? thugass is only here because he fucked up doing his speech (negative shant beat newsom) and needs to come as reasonable. rita only too happy (nay duty!) to give him online blowjob.

Campers,

There are five anonymous 'moderate' posters who have been able to destroy every chat forum in town with their nasty attacks. Please don't let them take you down. They are all cowards. Let's see your names, 'Cranky' and 'dbl cranky'.

And Chris, responding to anonymous posters is only empowering them.

Daly for Mayor!

h.

boys, boys, life is too short to be cranky. This is San Francisco. Go out and get a piece of ass. Screw the brains out of someone's wife. relax.

h i think theres a jew somewhere making money. go get drunk and puke on him. you'll feel better. nice to see you back here though. can't spell coward without ord.

But ... anonymous comments are the essence of web commentary!

the so called "moderate" posters from The Wall and Junto and the rest are cowards and all want to ram PC politics down our throats if we don't believe justlike they do they hate us. It's PC without the ethics !

And Gavin got it good, twice this week. I laughed. Funny how every initiative he backed after CNC was defeated, every supervisorial candidate he backs loses, and yet pepole say he's popular..I guess when he's not trying to DO anything besides look good and read books with glasses and hide the fact his lips move.

At least Daly can read. You crankypants people suck and lie like ....like politicians!

When do the politics end and the governing begin for George W. Bush - I mean Chris Daly?? We cannot stop sending money to the war in Iraq that we do not have - I mean Chris Daly's pet projects that we do not have.

Has anyone taken a look at the retiree healthcare benefits the City has obligated itself to? Why do we continue to offer full retiree healthcare benefits (at retirement age) after someone has worked for the City for a mere 5 years? Is the pay that bad - geez, $80k and up for starting salaries for professional jobs sounds okay, and $65k for starting police with a jump to $81k (this is before the enticing overtime pushes is up another $40-$50k per year) sounds good enough - do we really need to promise healthcare too after only 5 years of service?

I digress...

The politics have to stop and working for the people needs to begin in this City. Newsom seems to keep trying ... only to get bullied and attacked by George W. Bush, I mean Chris Daly and his desire to ALWAYS be running for office instead of WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE.

Here's my 2 cents on what should be the focus - HIRE MORE POLICE IN THE CITY!!! Too many folks have been killed and injured by automobile drivers who drive at excessive speeds in the City because they CAN get away with it, since our traffic cop group is less than HALF STAFFED right now.

This isn't about laughing about Chris Daly Punking Newsom at every chance - this is about getting both of those politicians to WORK FOR THE PEOPLE.

H, your definition of anoymous coward is anybody who does not agree with you. This blog is great for the different opinions expressed here. Let there be differences, and defending and lambasting those with whom you disagree and agree with. I like this site because there are different schools of thought that post here. Long may it last. And my name is Dave, yours is "h".... hmmmm

At least Chris hasn't been asleep on the job.And he means what he says.
Why is it that Newsom has only come awake to the city's issues? And talk about back peddling, there was a prop K issue. One thing you can agree about Chris Daly is that he is straight forward on everything that he does.Him and Ross both.

As the original cranky, I do appreciate Daly having the honesty to come on here and make comments and take the occasional insult.

That is impressive compared to some other politicians.

As for anonymity -- I think it's up to the person whether they want to reveal who they are. I'm a nobody, I don't work in politics, I ride MUNI, and I don't really need any publicity because my commentary is not ego driven (as many wannabe politicos are).

Gavin supporters are hot!!! Let's get together and not talk politics - soon.

Gavin Sucks.com

h brown, we need you. you're one of the only people in town NOT AFRAID of the jews who run this town into the ground. everyone else does not like the TRUTH thrown in their face. face up HATERS on why the cops can still beat on us. cause the capitalists can pay them off. and thank god daly is on our side.

I'd like to remind SFist readers not to feed the trolls, no matter how hungry they may sound.

I've been watching SF Govt. TV's broadcast of the Budget Committee meeting, and I'm happy to say common sense has prevailed during public comment thus far.

http://sfgov.org/site/sfgtv_index.asp?id=11463

and then Chris Daly began talking about himself as a victim ....

What's so hard to comprehend about the public wanting this public/private partnership rather than having a City-owned system?? The City is projected to run deficits - the only thing that fixes deficits is increased fees/taxes or reduced services. The City does so great running MUNI - are you f'ing nuts??!?

Chris Daly rocks, and so does his wife Sarah Low.

If the worst that can be said about Chris is about his home,I believe he is what he is,True Blue. Can't say that about Peskin,McGoldrick or even Newsom.

A young boy asked his father if all fairy tales begin with "Once Upon
A Time?"

"No," he replied. "A whole lot of them begin with 'If elected, I
promise...'"
Exception is Daly.

the town hall meetings are worthless not even interesting to a tv station, we hope.

Current politics are boring and meaningless. Nothing changes anyways except, those who tirelessly and needlessly cause a stink at lecture meetings. Love those chickens though.

Now that the city political scene is a yawn, time to get back to the main focus, What ever happened to the diaper-wearin' astronaut who never changed it all the way to Florida?

I support Supervisor Daly and his wife rocks! I hope she saved a little of that spirit she showed the Golden Gate Restaurant Association for a few other deserving parties like gavin, phil ginsberg and the new voice of "tiny town" nathan ballard (moe, larry and curly joe) Go Chris! And while we're at it could someone send Louise Renne another pacifier and a fresh depends, her tantrums are starting to smell, among other things.
