Craftwork: Get Mama Something Handmade

We know you're inundated with craft fairs these days. And while we're not complaining either, once in a while we want something a little different, which is why we're excited about the Maven Fair, happening this Saturday in San Francisco. Maven Fair is described as an urban design and craft fair devoted exclusively to promoting the work of women artists, with a special emphasis on emerging women of color designers. The fair promises to bring innovative, quirky and exquisite goods, one of a kind jewelry, housewares, baby goods, accessories and clothes. Judging from the sneak peak of what will be on sale they aren't lying. Could we pull off wearing this eyehand necklace? We're not really sure, but we love the weathered look of it and it's so very different than all the charm necklaces we're seeing around these days. We're also fans of these bingo bobby pins, made from vintage bingo playing pieces, you can also by them online at, The Weekend Store. But maybe you just want something simple and pretty for mom? Looks like there will be lots of simple and pretty in the form of earrings, necklaces and tote bags. Maven Fair is this Saturday, May 12th from 11am-4pm at 1021 Sanchez street.

Another opportunity to support local artists this weekend is the first annual Mission Open Studios. There will be over 300 artists participating from 9 different studios spread out over the Mission. The studios will be open all weekend long, so you'll have lots of time to expose yourself to all the amazing art happening in one of our favorite neighborhoods in the city. There will be an opening reception at all of the studios on Friday night with drinks and food. For a full map and more info head on over to Mission Arts Monthly. We're excited to see these mixed media pieces from Stephanie Choo close up. We've already seen some of Eric Otto's paintings in the flesh, and we're looking forward to see what else he's got up in his studio now. One of our favorite things about open studios is getting to peer into the wonderful worlds of some of our very favorite artists, it's like walking by lit windows at night and trying to see what's going on inside people's homes, except your actually encouraged to come in and be nosey here. How great is that?

So there! Go buy your mom something pretty and support local artists while you're at it.
