You've got a raging weekend planned, and and going out on a Sundaynight is always a mixed bag. On the one hand it's the a school night. On the other hand, you'll be teathered to your cube for the next five days straight. SFist has your back. Why not go to a mellow show? Casados is playing at the Rockit Room (um, yes, we do love the club name) tonight. We've really been digging Casados's song Panama , as well as the rest of their latest release. It's chill, it's calming, it's pretty, and well, we can't stop listening. Nic Dillon, Casados front man, has answered SFist's call to an interview, and well he seems pretty cool. Chill music with a cool band on a Sunday night with a $6 cover. Yes, you can thank us later.
Best show you've played and what made it great?
Heather and I have played a lot of shows. Our favorite shows are the ones where we can tell people are really listening and paying attention. I can't think of one show that stands out above the rest. Some of the biggest shows we've played are probably some of the worst shows we've played. Big chatty audiences never make for a great show. We actually prefer the small, more intimate shows.
The best fans are:
I think the best fans are the ones that don't treat you like a rock star. The best fans come up to you after a show and tell you something encouraging about your performance that lets you know they were really paying attention. The best fans send you an email and tell you how great your new record is. I just got an email from Hans in the Netherlands this morning. Things like that make you feel great!. The best fans let you know that they are listening and they care.
Favorite city you've played in?
I think New York is pretty amazing. We haven't actually had any awesome shows there yet, but as far as cities go, New York is one of our favorites. Athens, GA is barely a city, but it might be one of our favorite places we've ever hit on tour. The town just has a good vibe. It's peaceful. The weather is good. Great people all around.
Where can we see you next?
We're touring from the Midwest to the Northwest, down the coast and back to the Midwest. So, we'll be hitting a lot of towns over the next month. After we get back, we're going to mostly stay close to home. We'll be doing some recording, attending around ten weddings, integrating a new drummer, and just taking some time off to work on things at home. Why did everyone decide to get married this year?
Any advice to aspiring musicians out there?
There are a lot of musicians who are great, but I think the key to really doing something is to just go out and do it. I know a lot of great musicians right now who are just sitting around contemplating their dream of playing music. It seems kind of silly. I say, if you want to play music, play music. Granted, playing music requires some sacrifice. Touring is important, and while it's fun in some ways, it's not the most comfortable lifestyle. It also takes a lot of time to book tours, and in the end, you'll have to plan on loosing some money for a while. Still, I say be proactive in whatever you do. Don't just sit around waiting for some record label to pick you up and make your life easy. That's a fantasy. I think it's really all about hard work and passion. You have to be driven in whatever you do. Otherwise, you're probably not going to accomplish much.
What's your favorite song to perform live?
Panama is probably my favorite song off our new EP, and it's probably my favorite song to perform live right now as well. People have told us that they can really picture what the whole song is about. Like, it takes them on some kind of journey. I think that's great.
Friday/ May 6 – Rockit Room/ 406 Clement St. SF CA 94118// Cover $6// Music at 8, Casados go on at 9
Name
Nic Dillon
Introduce yourself in one sentence
Do I have to include, "Hello, my name is Nic"? Because technically, that's one sentence.
Age and Occupation
26 - Singer/Songwriter for the band Casados
Home Town
Champaign, IL
How long have you lived in Champaign?
About a year now. Champaign is a college town in the middle of corn fields. Surprisingly, the music and arts community is nice here. It's really encouraging, centrally located in the US, which is good for touring, and more than anything, rent is affordable, so we don't have to worry too much about money living here.
Favorite place to spend time online
I try to avoid spending time online. Unfortunately, I spend about 8 hours a day online when I'm at home. I do IT Consulting part-time at the University of Illinois when I'm not on tour. I like listening to the This American Life podcast every week. In general, I'm an NPR fan. I don't read any blogs, and I don't visit any websites regularly.
What I'm currently Reading
I'm reading 'The Irresistible Revolution' by Shane Claiborne. He's an activist from Phily. Great dude. Great book. We stayed with him recently when we were on the East Coast.
Heather is reading 'Traveling Mercies' by Anne Lamott, who is a great Bay Area writer. I read this book and recommended it to her.
Favorite mode of transportation
Bicycle.
Best Band or Musician to come out of the Bay Area?
I grew up listening to Operation Ivy and a bunch of other Bay Area bands. While I'm sure there are some great new bands in the Bay Area, I'm still pretty partial to those older Lookout bands. That stuff influenced me a lot when I was young.
Favorite Bay Area Stereotype, and whether or not you buy into it
I've actually never been to the Bay Area. This will be our first time out there, but I've heard everyone in the Bay Area is really health conscious, environmentally friendly, and so on. I hope it's true!
I want all the SFists out there to know
...that while I don't know him personally, Heather and I do know some people who have worked closely with Barack Obama over the last few years, and they have had nothing but great things to say about him. I don't know why I want all the SFists to know know this exactly, but I feel like it might be important. Clearly, politics is a very impersonal game. Nevertheless, I feel like Barack might be a little different. At least, I hope he is. I think he could definitely help repair our country's image internationally, and he seems to have a genuine understanding of what the real issues are in America. I realize a politician from Illinois is generally not to be trusted. We live in one of the most corrupt states ever. Nevertheless, I think Barack is an exception. Or at least, I'm hoping he is.
Do you really take your dog on tour with you?
Yes. We have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Sadie. She's about 12 pounds right now, and won't grow to be more than 14 or 15 probably. She went on her first tour this Spring. She is about 7 months old now, and we are having a lot of fun bringing her on tour with us.
How does that work? What do you do with her when you're at a show?
Sadie's a good looking dog, so she has that working in her favor. Most places let her come in, and she is generally well behaved. When we were on the east coast recently, she got into every show except for one. The people at the shows love her.

Umm, these folks are playing *Sunday* night. Tonight they're in Oregon.
I'm listening to them now on Rhapsody. Very nice.
