SFist Jenna goes APE!
Adding to the estimable Alternative Press Expo coverage by SFist Jeremy comes a little more APE coverage, albeit a teensy bit late. (Hey, its been a busy week!)
Among our favs of the day were local art collective Germart and of course, Ker-Bloom, which we blogged about here .
You may recognize the comic strip Tammy Pierce is Unlovable from the back cover of Bust Magazine but we were floored to meet the artist in person. Esther Pearl Watson puts out the priceless chronicles of Tammy Pierce, a hilariously heinous high school teen. (Did we mention the comic takes places in the 80s? Revisit all those memories of teased, ratted hair and slouched, multi-colored socks!)
We also were lucky enough to grab a copy of Orange Party Balls!, a collection of those ubiquitous box and package recipes that we all ate growing up - but would die before admitting now. If you ever need a recipe for Hot Spinach Balls, Mayonnaise Cake, Hamburger Soup or a Ham and Cheese Log, give us a call-- we'll be happy to send it over.
Esther was there with husband Mark Todd , also an illustrator and daughter Lili Todd, whose zine, Fashion Tips, we scooped up for $1. Check out more of Esther's work and get back copies of zines at funchicken.com.
SFist Jenna, contributing. Doesn't Lili Todd look adorable? More APE fun and pictures after the jump!
After recovering from meeting and loving the fabulous Esther and fam, we dropped by to check out the Wee Beasties at The Atrox's table. Their Kitty-Face Kitty comics were the first thing that caught our eye -- well-drawn, cute and clever. We couldn't stop oohing and ahhing over the tiny painted clay sculptures by Atrox member Leslie Levings. Favs included a femme and suave squid, but we couldn't resist pocketing a tiny Bigfoot, wearing a red scarf and a sly, toothy grin (a steal at $6!). Pick up one of your own at Leslie's Etsy site here. She takes custom orders so don't hesitate to contact her through her Etsy site to request the tiny baby goblin or a pink yeti you've been dreaming about.
We then wandered over the Rachel Hospodar's table. A local SF artist, Rachel works in mixed media, creating felt hair accessories, scarves and more -- all made from recycled and renewable materials. We really loved her paintings and prints - especially the prints of SF neighborhoods that incorporated drawings and illustrations over tiny color photos and Muni passes. If you missed her at APE, Rachel also hosts a bi-monthly art/fashion event called Pandora's Trunk -- a free event with live music, drinks, food and stylee goodies up for purchase.
We also were super excited to see the return of Skinner from last year, where we scooped up a sweet vintage wallet, hand-painted with a gruesome grinning monster. This year, we snagged a fly brown clutch adorned with killer Frankenstein-esque floating heads. You can check out more of his work here and the cool work and shows of Abide Visuals, pictured in the second photo.
Additional APE highlights - We also checked out the etheral wood paintings and illustration of Thylacine Graphics and the Pod Post booth, with letterpress merit badges and an awesome PodPost MailArt Bento package, complete with vintage Japanese stamps, stationary, airmail envelopes, postal stamps and more.
