@h/24: my comment had nothing to do with newsom. i could honestly take him or leave him. i still don't think singling out and naming a private citizen as a posterboy for citywide fiscal waste is even remotely ethical journalism. i don't even think it was the most sensational and effective way to deliver the story & get results.

The guy should have just clocked Noyes as he was coming after him. . Noyes is punk and I have to laugh at all of the posters saying"you don't know what the guy was doing before this" or better yet "he was picking his pocket" Ummm how many of you were there? oh none of you so you are just talking out of your A**. Noyes is a typical dish it out but not take it kind of puss. Come now H. a policeman? Noyes looked like he was on the preview for some upcoming out of shape show. It is not like the guy he was chasing was Carl Lewis and from this video I never saw the Noyester catch him. If Noyester wants to be let alone stay in the studio. If he wants to play in public be ready to deal with the consequenses of his actions. Simple as that. If he did a negative story on me and he was filming on the street he would have no chance of finishing his piece. Better yet I would follow him around and not let him work at all. Campers, Earnest (23) ... Noyes was doing his job when approached. And, Eric Jaye has gone to the local KGO network chief to try and get Noyes canned for pressing Newsom and Ragone. Noyes was right in all 3 instances. SFist has a little Newsom team working the site since it brought down Ragone and they'll keep posting tidbits like this. It's their job. Notice that 'Dave' and 'Earnest' and 'I' all sound alike and they all sound like Ragone? No one has commented on the obvious. Hell, the way Dan chased down that demonstrator made me think that he'd have been a great cop. Where's your thread on Newsom refusing to go on Conan cause O'Brien hurt his feelings with a joke about Ruby? If Gavin takes a header off the bridge are you gonna blame it on Conan? h.

sfmike,maybe the first time they broadcast the humiliation of Ken was not a bad thing, but then he resigned, and they showed it again, and then they showed it again, for the love of god, he was a park employee who skived off for a day and Dan Noyes thought that 18 months after he forced him out of a job of 16 years that not once but twice he would play his plight in front of 4 million people. Please realise the humilition and devastaion that one reporter played on one poor guy for not doing his job properly. He had quit his job for 18 months when they replayed it just before he took his life. They had also played it again. It was a cheap political shot.

Ken Bostock, like too many other people working for the San Francisco Rec & Park Department, was a complete shirker who didn't bother doing the job he was being paid very well to do. In other words, he was a thief and he got caught, thanks to Dan Noyes and his news team, and he deserved to be fired. Blaming Noyes for a Golden Gate Bridge suicide is ridiculous. Mr. Bostock obviously had a lot of personal demons and for his friend Dave to blame Mr. Noyes everytime his name comes up in cyberspace is getting very, very old.

The 1st Amendment may not allow you to "harrass" while someone is doing thier job. But, it does allow you to stand in a public place and to hold up a sign. That's what we call protesting or picketing. The fact that you do so while a news camera is running does not change this analysis. Now, if the guy was touching Dan, then that's a different matter. But it doesn't look like that was happening. Dan said something about "this is my job". I think he meant, "don't fuck with me while I'm on camera, you protesting freak." Isn't that what Bush does? Herds protesters into a fenced off area a block away from his podium?

Unfortunately, the day before Valentine's Day, Ken Bostock, a former gardener for the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, jumped from Golden Gate Bridge to his death in the cold and churning water of San Francisco Bay. Bostock was the subject of an ABC-7 News report that accused the gardener of shirking his duties and milking the City payroll. The scathing report by ABC-7 reporter Dan Noyes left Bostock in deep depression. He resigned from his job and worked part-time as a bartender for the Bar on Castro. Dan Noyes, the reporter who had so much to say about Bostock on the air refused to comment on the gardener's suicide. Instead, he referred calls to ABC-7 President and General Manager Valari Staab who issued a carefully crafted statement that offered nothing of substance other than this chilly formal statement: "His death is a tragedy. We extend our deepest sympathies to his friends and family." There are several issues that lead to Bostock's suicide. ABC-7 went for a cheap shot. Dan Noyes was authorized to go out and uncover some dirt about San Francisco municipal employees. He wanted to assure his station of good ratings with a story that "uncovers waste and fat on the City's payroll." So, did he go after someone with authority in City Hall or perhaps one of the many loafers and couch potatoes who work for the Health and Human Services Department? No. Noyes took a cheap shot and followed an ordinary city gardener around town with hidden cameras. It appears that ABC-7 publicly harassed and embarrassed this man to the point where he quit his job of 16 years and slowly sunk into deep depression. In my mind, ABC-7 , Dan Noyes and Valari Staab are partly responsible for this man's death

What you don't see in this clip is what the Sign Guy is doing to Noyes BEFORE he takes off after him. Something was going on - maybe the guy assaulted him with the sign or like h says put his hands on him or grabbed him - if he took something off him or out of his pocket, Noyes would have had every right to chase him down. Are we gonna start telling people they can't chase down pickpockets now? I don't know if that's what happened, but clearly Noyes was angered by something OTHER than the guy just standing silently with a sign in his camera shot.

Gosh, how old is this? I remember when it aired back around the time of the strike against KGO. I think the farmer's market had not yet moved from in front of the Ferry Building to the Green St. location -- way before they moved to their present Ferry building location. 10 years? Too bad we can't decipher what's going on. I'm betting that the striker has some other issues going on with his nonstriking co-worker, Noyes. But that's as far as I can decode this. Elaine, did you get this tip with some explanation of its age and context? If not, it's sleazy.

campers, This film is from Eric Jaye. Trust me. I know the various scatological trails of local consultants. His order was to find anything that could discredit Noyes. His goal is, as always, to get a journalist being too honest about his client ... fired. Two things stood out. First, it looked like the guy pick-pocketed Noyes, or otherwise had hands on him. Second ... someone at KGO gave Jaye the tape. It seems to have been shot by one of their cameras. h.
