American Football Spectacular: Capsulizing the 2007 NFL Draft's First Round
It's time for American Football Spectacular's capsule reviews of the 2007 NFL Draft. Adventure, excitement, measureables! All hard information was culled from NFL.com's pretty excellent draft tracker site. Proceed.
* Selection # / Team (trade info) / Player / Position / Height / Weight / School
* 01 / Oakland / Russell, JaMarcus / QB / 6-6 / 263 / Louisiana State: Sorry, JaMarcus; the Raiders only picked up one offensive lineman in the draft. So, uh, now you've got that guy and Jeremy Newberry to add to last year's offensive line unit. Start buying pain medication in bulk now, my friend, 'cause you will be sacked a lot this coming season. On the bright side for Oakland, have you seen how well the Golden State Warriors are doing?
* 02 / Detroit / Johnson, Calvin / WR / 6-4 / 237 / Georgia Tech: The founder of K Records and a key member of the Northwestern indie rock scene, it will be intriguing to see how well Johnson excels within Detroit offensive coordinator Mad Mike Martz's multi-receiver pass patterns. (Har, har.) Now seriously, either Calvin Johnson has the talent to be a success wherever they go, but Detroit's legacy of leadership futility makes it specifically difficult to succeed there. Fire Millen!
* 03 / Cleveland / Thomas, Joe / OT / 6-6 / 313 / Wisconsin: Went fishin' with his Dad for draft day rather than dealing with the New York City draft spectacle. Smart guy.
* 04 / Tampa Bay / Adams, Gaines / DE / 6-5 / 260 / Clemson: The Bucs coveted WR Calvin Johnson, but'll settle for a new defensive edge-rusher to succeed the aging pass-rushing DE Simeon Rice.
* 05 / Arizona / Brown, Levi / OT / 6-4 / 328 / Penn State: Must protect pretty QB Leinart. So, they got this guy.
* 06 / Washington / Landry, LaRon / FS / 6-2 / 205 / Louisiana State: Sure must suck to be a Washington fan. After wasting a bunch of money on free agent safety Adam Archuleta last season, Washington spends its first-rounder on another safety.
* 07 / Minnesota / Peterson, Adrian / RB / 6-2 / 218 / Oklahoma: A speedy power-back with a history of injuries, this guy is the new Priest Holmes. What that means is this caveat: sure he's great; but how long will he last?
* 08 / Atlanta (from Houston) / Anderson, Jamaal / DE / 6-6 / 279 / Arkansas: The Falcons have been trying to buy or draft a pass rush for the past couple years. Maybe this'll do'er.
* 09 / Miami / Ginn Jr., Ted / WR / 6-0 / 180 / Ohio State: Surprise! On her couch in Chicago, Jessica shouted at her television in disbelief. We don't blame her. The Dolphins needneedneedNEEED a quarterback above all else! Yet instead of picking up ND's uber-touted QB Brady Quinn, Miami picks up a speedster receiver coming off a debilitating leg injury. Who-the-wha-now? Hmph. Extremely high-risk, with poor odds of good results. This pick will determine how the the history of the 2007 NFL Draft is remembered.
* 10 / Houston (from Atlanta) / Okoye, Amobi / DT / 6-2 / 287 / Louisville: All the teams in the AFC South are girding themselves to try to beat SFist Eve's division-leading Indianapolis Colts. And how? Defense. This is Houston's second-straight first-round pick expended on their defensive line. The teen-aged (teen-aged!) Okoye is expected to anchor the HOU line for seasons to come.

* 11 / San Francisco / Willis, Patrick / ILB / 6-1 / 240 / Mississippi: Head Coach Nolan II thinks he's found his field general in Patrick Willis. Heck, Willis is even going to wear number 52 in honor of the ravening alpha-ILB Ray Lewis. Nolan coached Lewis during his time in Baltimore. And so, the Niners take the first linebacker off the board. Willis has will, knowledge, footspeed, work ethic, and great character. One thing he won't have is "Diff'rent Stokes"-related jokes regarding his last name. At least not from us at SFist -- never, ever. We promise this with all that we are.
* 12 / Buffalo / Lynch, Marshawn / RB / 5-11 / 217 / California: Cal's own Marshawn goes to Buffalo to replace Willis McGahee at running back, and appreciate the musical canon of Ani DiFranco.
* 13 / St. Louis / Carriker, Adam / DE / 6-6 / 292 / Nebraska: A big, meaty defensive end from Nebraska, Carriker's name is a lot more fun if you imagine Homestar Runner saying it out loud. Try!

All the rest from round one after the jump.
* 14 / N.Y. Jets (from Carolina) / Revis, Darrelle / CB / 6-0 / 197 / Pittsburgh: If you can name a defensive player for the Jets other than ILB Jonathan Vilma or DE Shaun Ellis, we would be very impressed. That's why they picked up CB Darrelle Revis.
* 15 / Pittsburgh / Timmons, Lawrence / OLB / 6-3 / 232 / Florida State: Pittsburgh loves linebackers. New Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin loves linebackers. Pittsburgh needed a linebacker what with Joey Porter going to Miami and other LBs aging. Pittsburgh got a linebacker. The end.
* 16 / Green Bay / Harrell, Justin / DT / 6-4 / 305 / Tennessee: Green Bay hasn't had a quality defensive tackle since the size-of-a-small-car NT Gilbert Brown was there at the beginning of the decade. They need Harrell since their defense is still so full of personnel holes.
* 17 / Denver (from Jacksonville) / Moss, Jarvis / DE / 6-6 / 251 / Florida: Denver Head Coach Mike Shanahan doesn't care what you think. Also, he hates you. He picked up one of the most tarnished character cases in the draft, and has the confidence that he can make Moss produce for him. For his second round pick, Shanahan just plain kicked a puppy,
* 18 / Cincinnati / Hall, Leon / CB / 5-11 / 193 / Michigan: The Bengals need Leon Hall to help shore up their defense, since their balanced offensive attack can pace Cincinnati with the best in the league. There will be no joke here regarding all of the Bengals' arrests from last season.
* 19 / Tennessee / Griffin, Michael / FS / 6-0 / 195 / Texas: OK, pairing Griffin with Lamont Thompson will give the Titans a pair of impressive safeties. But Tennessee had other needs, like o-line, so this is a perplexing pick by TEN.
* 20 / N.Y. Giants / Ross, Aaron / CB / 6-1 / 192 / Texas: Continuing the run on defensive backs, the New York American football Giants grabbed Ross to apprentice under old master CB Sam Madison.
* 21 / Jacksonville (from Denver) / Nelson, Reggie / FS / 6-0 / 193 / Florida: The Jags look hell-of-smart since they traded down with Denver, but still got a big, physical safety to replace the gone-to-Seattle Deon Grant. With Nelson in the secondary, Jacksonville's smashmouth defense will be even less fun for opposing offense to match up against.
* 22 / Cleveland (from Dallas) / Quinn, Brady / QB / 6-3 / 226 / Notre Dame: Yep, between this pick and Miami's Ted Ginn pick, this is how the 2007 Draft will be remembered. We like it when players get picked up by the teams they grew up fans of. Quinn idolized the Browns' sidearm-slingin' QB Bernie Kosar. Now he's the new Browns quarterback. Serendipitous!
* 23 / Kansas City / Bowe, Dwayne / WR / 6-2 / 217 / Louisiana State: AFS Kansas City correspondent Kyle approves of this pick by his Chiefs. "Seems like a play maker," Kyle said, 'Good hands, great route runner, breaks a LOT of tackles. Wouldn't have minded them using our third-rounder on [WR Randy] Moss, either instead of letting the Overratiots get him." Yup.
* 24 / New England (from Seattle) / Meriweather, Brandon / FS / 5-11 / 192 / Miami (Fla.): After the last two seasons of dang-near playing suited-up Patriot fans in his secondary due to personnel injuries, New England grabbed a safety in the first-round. Meriweather has a bit of a bad record, so Head Coach Belichick is betting that the selfless team-oriented culture of the Patriots will keep this new guy in line. Otherwise, it's back to pulling dudes out of the stands to cover opposing receivers. Would it be too much to hope that the Patriots pick up another defensive back named Pippin?
* 25 / Carolina (from N.Y. Jets) / Beason, Jon / OLB / 6-0 / 236 / Miami (Fla.): Once a linebacker-rich franchise, the Panthers need to reload after losing Will Witherspoon to free agency and Dan Morgan to persistent concussions. That's where you come in, Beason.
* 26 / Dallas (from Philadelphia) / Spencer, Anthony / DE / 6-3 / 266 / Purdue: The Cowboys still need a difference-making DE for the 3-4 defensive scheme that Head Coach Tuna started to assemble before he retired last season. With 3-4 plotter Wade Phillips now Head Coach, it made sense to pick up Spencer.
* 27 / New Orleans / Meachem, Robert / WR / 6-3 / 211 / Tennessee: The Saints offense featured a wide-open passing assault last year with a bunch of no-name guys and aged WR Joe Horn. Now they think they've got a real go-to wideout for the future.
* 28 / San Francisco (from New England) / Staley, Joe / OT / 6-5 / 302 / Central Michigan: Chicanery! The Niners traded up to grab this guy before Baltimore could grab him. He's extremely fast for a offensive lineman, and still has room to grow. Watch for the 49ers to utilize his speed to "pull" him on plenty of trap running plays. Came into college football as a tight end... perhaps Staley could be used for some trickeration plays as well. Hey, even Jumbo Elliott caught a touchdown pass.
* 29 / Baltimore / Grubbs, Ben / G / 6-3 / 314 / Auburn: Ha-ha, since the 49ers grabbed Staley first, the Ravens had to pick up Grubbs to help rebuild the interior of their offensive line.
* 30 / San Diego / Davis, Craig / WR / 6-1 / 207 / Louisiana State: Isn't there some sort of local legislation that prevents the Chargers from having any good wide receivers in recent years? I mean, they picked up veteran WR Keenan McCardell, but c'mon now. They're hoping Davis can reverse this law.
* 31 / Chicago / Olsen, Greg / TE / 6-4 / 252 / Miami (Fla.): Olsen will be Head Coach of Da Bearsss one day. That's what happened to the last tight end that Chicago drafted in the first round. His name? Ditka.
* 32 / Indianapolis / Gonzalez, Anthony / WR / 6-0 / 195 / Ohio State: How psyched is Gonzalez? He gets to be the new slot receiver for the Colts' precision offense. Like the new cog to be plugged into the great machine. Lucky duck. It's a sure thing that he's been walking around with a dazed smile on his face ever since the draft.
