What to do About the Angels Blue?
Last year, we wrote in praise of Fleet Week, mainly because of those nifty Blue Angels who do those stunts high on up in the sky. We might love them (well, not all of us) but other people don't like them primarily for the reason that they could be quite dangerous, especially when they fly over the city.
But surely you jest, said supporters, those things never crash! Oh, but they do.
Over the weekend, a Blue Angel crashed at an air show in South Carolina, killing the pilot. An investigation is now being conducted to find out just what happened.
Meanwhile, back here in San Francisco, the question becomes what should we do about this year's Fleet Week? After all, a Blue Angel crashing somewere over the city would be bad. Very, very bad. Gavin told the Chron that he's going to wait and see what the investigation concludes before making a decision. Aaron Peskin also adopted a wait-and-see attitude and proposed the idea that the Blue Angels can continue, but only over the water. On the SFGate blog, commenters are all over the place (and we mean all over the place- everything from accusations of NIMBYism to "stop the war machine!").
